When to get our new dog ?

Hello MNetters !

We sadly lost our dog in July due to bone cancer. It was a quick and sudden illness and the last few days of his life were heartbreaking. He was such a gentle and soul and I'm not completely healed from losing him.

However, I miss the big hellos when I come home and having some company when my husband works away so we have agreed to get another . The big question is when ... I want to aim for after Xmas . However we have a 2 week holiday planned in early July 2025 and my husband thinks after then?

Would it be unfair to have them in kennels for a 2 week stay after only 6 months with us? My last dog felt completely comfortable at kennels as he spent the first few years of his life there being a greyhound. However I also appreciate he was a special big guy and our next might be completely different . WWYD?

I got my dog (very timid, nervous rescue) in October and had to go away for 10 days in January. I got a dog sitter to come and stay so that she had some continuity (i.e. I wan’t there, but she was still in her home). She was fine.

If I could avoid kennels I would, but a home stay, at your house or theirs for a dog that's 7-8 months old is fine. Surely you will have some sort of holiday most years so if you wait until Aug then a dog you get then is not going to be that much older next year.
