Recommend me a collar pls! (cocker spaniel)

We have a lovely and bouncy cocker spaniel who has just managed to kill his 2nd collar. First one was a neoprene, fleece backed collar that broke and the second was a fleece with nylon webbing one which he went into the forest with today and came out without it. We can only think he caught it on something and it snapped.

He dives in and out of bushes, throws himself into water and swims and will roll in any mud possible so it needs to be a very tough collar (can't be leather as he will ruin it). I also don't like massively obvious branding. Other than that, we are not fussy!

If anyone has a collar that they are happy with, pls let me know!

All mine have had the rolled leather collars. Think Ancol do one. I rub saddle soap in periodically but my springer spaniel has had his eleven years.

Thanks both I will have a look at these!

Biothane Collar Rocket Dog collars

Will not break, can deal with wet, mud, sand and needs no looking after like leather collars. Comes in loads of lovely colours. Is nice and soft.

Survived my wcs and labrador madness. Even the more sensible collies are happy to wear them

@FlyMeToPluto Another a leather collared spaniel owner here! We have a fab one from Le Chameau which is waxed cotton on one side and also have a few polo belt collars too which are superb quality and look lovely. Like others I just saddle soap them and they've all lasted really well. For occasions when we are specifically swimming she has a Ruffwear one but it hardly ever gets used if I'm honest as the leather ones are so good.

AutumnLeaves24 · 26/10/2024 19:09

For walking one woods, I'd rather have collars the do break if under pressure & one that doesn't for walks near roads etc.

id rather go through collars than the dog hang itself.

Ruffwear. They're robust, easy to wash and go on forever. All the Ruffwear stuff is brilliant, especially the harnesses. None of this fashion rubbish.

FlyMeToPluto · 26/10/2024 19:51

Thanks all, these are great

@AutumnLeaves24 that's a good point - maybe we stick with the more flimsy ones for the forest and use the other ones for walks

I think you got working cocker. They 'are' energetic but are easy to train, so train your cocker not to kill his collar. Can you share a picture of his?

I find biothane the best and most hard wearing material while also being soft and comfortable. Lasts well in and out of the water and easy to wipe clean.

Agree totally with this.

We found the total opposite - I spent nearly £80 on a Ruffwear harness for mine when he reached maturity and I thought the quality was absolutely awful. It frayed and faded and looked really cheap.

In contrast, the £20 replacement of Amazon still looks brand new! Maybe we were unlucky but I'd never buy from Ruffwear again.

Can you please share the link of that ? I wanna see which one you bought

Personally, I'd go for no collar - so easy for them to get stuck in the hedges etc or hurt/strangle themselves- pop the collar back on once you need them on the lead or use a slip lead.

It's illegal for dogs not to wear a collar and tag in public unless they're working dogs.

We have one of these

https://jacobitesolutions.com/product/biothane-dog-collars/

It's really tough and just wipes clean.

£55.00 Shock

Mochudubh · 02/11/2024 17:31

Yes, it's quite steep but they are handmade and the buckles and rings are heavy duty (I have a very strong GSD).
