I have a small dog (7.5kgs) he gets half a tin of butchers tripe and a handful of Jollies Lifestage kibble.

It must work out less than a pound a day I think 🤔

We order through Tails.
Tails dog food and delivery service: Very good
Tails treatment of long-term customers: Poor

They have increased pricing above inflation every year. I always complain and get a few months discount but it doesn't appease my annoyance. The reason we haven't moved on to other food is that the dog likes the food and has a very settled stomach on it. It's easy to change the order or delivery date and I like the reliability of the delivery service. Better the devil you know, maybe? I've flounced off from other companies for similar reasons in the past and the replacement supplier hasn't been as good, so I'm wary now.

As I say, the cost has increased substantially since we started. This is particularly grating when each price increase is accompanied by a "woe is me" email from the "CEO" about how they're so sorry, they just have no choice blah blah. Maybe stop offering new customers a free month of dog food and look after your loyal customers instead. Anyway, rant over.

If anyone has recommendations for other good quality, delivery services I am all ears.

£4.79 for a German Shepherd, Labrador and English Springer Spaniel on raw. We use 1.65kg a day.

and what is wrong with grains?

It's not so much that there is anything wrong with grains in moderation (unless your dog has allergies), but some foods - like the Skinners already mentioned, use grains as a cheap bulking agent.

If you look at the better quality foods such as Millies Wolfheart, Canagan, Eden etc you see that the meat is listed first. Really, a good dog food should have fresh meat, some only have meat meal (which is dried meat derivatives) but it is usually desirable to have a higher proportion of meat and a much lower percentage of grains. Some dog foods (eg Skinners) appear to have more grain than meat...

Obviously the higher quality foods are much higher priced but the quality is vastly different and it really pays off to check the ingredients and percentages because some dog foods actually contain very little real meat.

Butternut Box - He's a small but very active dog so I double the recommended daily amount. It might be something like £50/month.
I also top it up with some Orijen kibbles + natural chews because he tends to be too skinny.
In total, I'd say I spend 70 a month. Which is ludicrous for a 5kg dog.

I feed my very fussy and sensitive greyhound lurcher the grain free Forthglade colmpete trays alongside dish of ad lib Forthglade cold pressed grain free dried. He does well on this and it costs about £80 a month. Won't eat certain flavours though.
I've tried Skinners, Ava, Acarna, Taste of the Wilderness, Orijen and Country Dog previously, as well as some I can't remember.

Chappie; despite being a murderous bastard (patterdale terrier) he has a sensitive tum, and this is the only food that doesn’t upset it. One tin a day, and it has nearly doubled in price, used to be around £15 for 24, is now nearer £30, though Home Bargains sometimes has it cheaper.

At his yearly vet check (for vaccinations) I’m always congratulated on how well and fit he looks.

Hill's Science Plan. Was feeding her Butternut Boxes until she refused them, and then Lily's Kitchen until I read that it wasn't actually that good for dogs, so now it's Hills. Costs about £50 for an 8-week supply.

Definitelyrandom · 16/10/2024 16:06

30 odd kg retired greyhound. A 15kg bag of Time Maintenance kibble costs £18 and lasts 5 weeks or so. He also has a tin of one of pretty much the whole range of Butchers (or tin of tuna/sardines plus half a tin of Butchers) per day - say 85p per day. And a dollop of Greek type yoghurt and small sprinkling of cheap porridge oats once a day - about £1.80 a month. He's in great condition.

@Fiftyfiveandcounting I'm going to try our dogs on Pure after your recommendation. I was wondering whether you have a referral code that you'd be happy to share?
