I've just looked at their ingredients too...😨Ummm. Just no.

Just trying to help
Even looked up the pea content for you
🤐

Wellness Core Lamb ingredients. Never knew peas were a potential problem. Other than those, pretty decent?

Lamb 38% (Fresh Lamb 20%, Dehydrated Lamb 18%), Peas 20%, Potato Protein, Potatoes, Rapeseed Oil, Beet Pulp 3%, Natural Flavour, Brewer's Dried Yeast (source of mannan-oligosaccharides) 3%, Linseed 3%, Lignocellulose, Apples, Carrots 0,5%, Yeast Extract (source of mannan-oligosaccharides) 0,5%, Dried Chicory Root (source of Fructo-oligo-saccharides and Inulin) 0,5%, Broccoli, Spinach 0,01%, Tomatoes, Blueberries, Cranberries, D-Glucosamine Hydrochloride 100 mg/kg, Chondroitin Sulphate 100 mg/kg, Yucca Schidigera, Mixed Herbs (Dried Rosemary, Dried Turmeric, Dried Citrus, Dried Eugenia)

I just put that into Allaboutdogfood. What's good is that you can click on all the ingredients and it tells you what they are. The Lignocellulose listed showed as yellow, meaning it's iffy, so I clicked on it and apparently it's best avoided.

PyreneanAubrie · 14/10/2024 19:52

Even the £99 Canagan is high in pea protein. Millies Wolfheart, another highly rated brand, has lucerne which is a type of pea or actual chickpeas.

It's just really difficult to find a food that is higher in meat than grains but not crammed with pea, potato and beet pulp.

I know, I was all set on Orijen for ages when researching puppies... then this pea issue came apparent and that has all kind of pea-ness. Probably should rephrase that but oh well 😳😂😂

PyreneanAubrie · 14/10/2024 19:59

I know, I appreciate that, thank you.

The lamb & rice has lucerne in it, which is pea protein, but the Skinners foods in general have no fresh meat content and the meat meal is far outweighed by the grains, which is concerning... Compare it with Millies Wolfheart or similar and you'll see what we mean.

😆😂😁

I shall endeavour to avoid the pea-ness for my girl.

Probably for the best... unless you've changed your mind about a houseful of Pyreneans 😂😂

RedHelenB · 14/10/2024 20:06

Asda, canned food and kibble. Plus he loves our leftovers. He's a happy dog

PyreneanAubrie · 14/10/2024 20:07

It's a minefield out there once you start looking at ingredients. I honestly lost a whole day recently looking at every brand of kibble in existence 😩

Our pups are worth it though, aren't they? It does pay off.

JustAnonymous · 14/10/2024 20:14

13kg spaniel x (could do with being about 12kg though as has put a bit on since neutering!). He has Scrumbles kibble and Burchers Tripe. Costs about £30 a month in total. He was really fussy pre-neutering, but now seems to eat anything, as he's constantly hungry, so managed to ditch the ridiculously expensive Buttetnut Box that was one of the only things he'd reliably eat!

HappiestSleeping · 14/10/2024 20:21

Burns complete for a 4 year old Lab. £1.15 per day.

Patienceinshortsupply · 14/10/2024 20:25

Millie's Wolfheart low fat Highland mix - £62 a month
Wet toppers from Country Hunter and Forthglade - £60 a month

1 very fussy spaniel and 1 eat anything spaniel. Both prone to colitis so tend to stick to the same food.

AutumnalCosiness · 14/10/2024 20:38

Oh didn't know that about the peas

Millie's Wolfheart for our 11 year old Springer, she's been on it since she was a puppy. We vary between the 60/40 mix flavours and costs about £50 every 8 weeks.

Looks good and no peas @CellophaneFlower Wolfworthy. Check it out!

limitededition555 · 14/10/2024 20:58

Edited

I just took a look as knew I'd looked at it before and got put off for some reason! I think it's as there are quite a few comments from people saying their dogs have started eating other dog's poo and one eating out of a plant pot since they changed to this food, so they think it might be lacking an ingredient in the food. Others saying their dogs seem constantly hungry. My dog is bad enough as it is for acting like she's being starved 😂

PyreneanAubrie · 14/10/2024 21:47

Oh, that's really good info @CellophaneFlower , thank you!

So, the search goes on...🙄

Mindymomo · 15/10/2024 06:43

I feed Butternut Box topped up with Wainrights dry food for my 26kg Border Collie, he seems to love it, nothing left. Costs around £90 per month. If anyone wants to try it, It's 60% off your first box here: butternutbox.com/Mandy460?share_source=copy_link 🐶💛
