And how much does it cost per day?

Probably works out about £40 a month to feed mine:
2 x bags of Tails.com or Scrumpies kibble (whichever is cheaper at Sainsbury's).
Mixed with raw, Lily's tinned or slow cooked chicken (minus bones, obv)
And the odd extras (he loves Sunday roast scraps)

Thanks @HildaHosmede that discount code will come in useful.

IWantToBeADCC · 13/10/2024 11:41

3 large dogs, feed them a mix of raw completes, chicken carcasses, windpipes, ribs chicken feet, ducks necks etc.

Costs around £50 per week.

WYorkshireRose · 13/10/2024 11:42

Ours are on a kibble by Green Pantry. I think it's around £55/bag on subscription and we order 2 per month for 2 Ddogs, so £110/month.

AutumnalCosiness · 13/10/2024 13:09

Thanks all.
Have just switched our small working lab from skinners kibble to pure.
She went right off the skinners.
Problem is it's soft, so she's going to need some kibble too for her teeth I'm thinking 🤔

Rabbit ears and fish skin chews are good for teeth, also good old fashioned biscuits.

tizwozliz · 13/10/2024 16:33

Two labs - they eat essentials kibble with something on top, normally either some forthglade 90%, or fish4dogs tins. Works out about £2 a day each

dermalermalurd · 14/10/2024 12:29

My outsize lab x collie ( really big for her type) has harringtons dry kibble with Naturo trays ( wet food). She is nearly 19 years old and still bounds down the path to greet me ( although she does sleep a lot these days).

stanleypops66 · 14/10/2024 12:46

Butternut box. Works out around £75 every 3 weeks. Dog loves it though. Also supplement with superfood salmon kibble.

CellophaneFlower · 14/10/2024 17:54

Gentle original kibble with a Butchers topper. I wanted to avoid kibble that contained peas/legumes etc due to the risk of DCM. This absolutely hasn't been proven but until more studies have been done I didn't want to risk it especially as I have a large breed dog. It's really hard to find kibble that doesn't contain these fillers as so many are grain free now.

Have no idea of cost though!

I've had a struggle finding a food without peas also. I want a kibble that's high in fresh meat not dried and preferably not too high in potato or rice or beet pulp. It's proving to be difficult to find one that ticks all the boxes whilst being suitable for a large breed. Some of the Millies Wolfheart ones looked good on paper but aren't formulated with large puppies in mind so I seem to be going round in circles 🙄

Skinner's Maintenance, Maintenance Plus and Lamb and Rice (and maybe others) don't seem to contain peas.

It's a good value food, not stellar (contains beet pulp and meat meal) but the dogs I know who live in it (including my own) do bloody well.

I know, I've spent hours and hours searching. Gentle was the best I could find, but does contain ground meat and there's not a large breed formulation. She was originally on Arden Grange Large Breed, as that's what her breeder had her on and I couldn't find a better alternative but I'd always considered moving her on to Gentle when she got a bit bigger. As it was, she made the choice for me as refused to eat the AG anymore!

Labracdabra · 14/10/2024 19:00

Skinners maintenance,
Maize, Wheat, Poultry Meat Meal, Barley, Poultry Fat, Beet Pulp, Vitamins & Minerals, Antioxidants & Preservatives (Calcium Propionate and BHT).

I'll live with a bit of pea content!

I've just looked at their ingredients too...😨Ummm. Just no.

If she's happy and doing well on that I'd stick with it.

My girl was started on Purina Large Robust puppy which isn't great but has no peas in, and her poo is good on it. I'm looking at a few other brands. I got her a Nourish large breed puppy salmon but she's not keen so I won't reorder that. The Wainwrights superfoods kibble has excellent ingredients but is tiny sized kibble. I just can't seem to find one that ticks all the boxes.

https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/

I used this website to get ideas/reviews of certain foods. My dog is only 8kg and can be picky! I tried all sorts- pate, trays, tins. I order Gentle dog food online in bulk, then mix this with sainsburys natures goodness and naturo. She then has 2 sachets of winalot a day too. I'd prefer her to have butchers, but she went off that.

Was coming on to say this. A lot of the foods previously mentioned are full of rubbish, this website is eye opening and really useful.

i feed Acana, not cheap but excellent quality and never gets wasted.

Carouselfish · 14/10/2024 19:23

Wellness Core. About 50/60 every three weeks. Plus they get mince or turkey every now and then. Should do more fresh food for them really.

WithASpider · 14/10/2024 19:25

Canagan dry for a 28kg Labrador. Took a lot of trial and error to find a grain free food that works well for her.

Costs about £60 every 6ish weeks.

Exactly this. I find a few that are almost perfect, but there's always something!

I had the same issues with the wet food as needed to change as she went off Butchers. Looked at forthglade, then noted it had a dodgy additive. Someone on here told me they've stopped adding it now, although it's still on the ingredients list on allaboutdogfood. I bought a load as it was on offer... she hated it 🤦‍♀️. She then decided she actually does like Butchers after all so now I'm stuck with 4 boxes of Forthglade 🤬 Oh well, at least the Butchers is cheaper. She clearly doesn't have an expensive palate!

Carouselfish · 14/10/2024 19:31

Oh and we do also like Millie Wolfheart's.

PyreneanAubrie · 14/10/2024 19:35

Wainwrights Superfoods: Contains alfalfa but low percentage. I think this is good. It also smells like proper food not like biscuit.

What's wrong with peas?

DCM in dogs (heart condtion) started to become more common and began to get linked to grain free foods as they've become more popular. Studies have been done and they think it could be the fillers they use to replace the grain, legumes, peas and maybe even potato.

Nothing has been proven though but it made me a bit wary.
