I’m writing this as I’m going round and round in circles as to what to do, so your opinions, thoughts and experiences would be great 🩷
My chihuahua is 14 years old, she is very much an old dog in both her behaviour and personality, up until recently she has been bobbing along quite happily. She’s been on medication for her allergies for years and gets very bad hay fever, sneezes a lot. She’s also got a grade 4 heart murmur. On Sunday she developed a sore eye, thankfully the vets is just round the corner but what I thought is just a wee eye infection is actually a glaucoma. Now her eye sight is very poor and she is blind with the eye with the glaucoma.
She’s been on medication and pain killers all this week but it still looks sore.
The vet spoke about removing the eye, but then I’m worried about her heart murmur and having to be under anaesthetic. I don’t mind her having the eye removed but wonder if it’s the right thing to do to such an old dog who’s struggling as it is. I don’t want her to be in pain but I’ve had her so long and don’t want to give up on her.

What would you do ?

I think she’s had a long and happy life. And in your own words she’s already struggling, and now needs life changing surgery that she’ll have to adjust to. And a major concern I would have is the nature of the issue, if one eyes gone then surely the other one isn’t too far behind it? What will you do if she has the op, makes it through, and then the other eye declines right after?

Aww OP, if she was mine i would deem her too old to be messed around and put through an operation. Just would not be fair on her.

Jessie1259 · 09/10/2024 19:25

I wouldn't put a dog through an operation at that age OP. She's had a lovely long life.

coffeesaveslives · 09/10/2024 19:30

Aw OP, I'm sorry. I would have her put to sleep Flowers

Ylvamoon · 09/10/2024 19:47

I wouldn't put her through the OP either.

Just make sure she's comfortable and pain free for as long as possible.

When that becomes impossible, I would send her over the rainbow bridge.
