Adolescent Dog Survival...Sharing Tips & Tails

Moving on from the puppy survival thread, this is for anyone with a hormonal teenager 🤪

Brodie is just over 7 months now, and is a fun loving pup who is (mostly) a pleasure to be around. My main issue is still walking him which can either be almost a pleasure, or like having a Tasmanian Devil doing breast stroke and bunny hopping down the road 😡. There seems to be no reason for which dog gets attached to the end of the lead, but at least it shows he can do it if he's in the mood!

We've also had our first proper tummy upset this week 🤢 no doubt due to some rubbish he picked up and swallowed before I spotted it. Thankfully it seems to have passed now.

Just dropping in to confirm that @brushingboots is real and not an axe murderer or a weirdo! 😄

Do you live near each other or did you meet midway? Just nosy... or maybe I'm subconsciously asking on behalf of the people on here who live in Yorkshire (I'm the enemy of course, being Lancastrian 😁)

brushingboots · 04/11/2024 19:40

@Bupster xxx

brushingboots · 04/11/2024 19:44

@PyreneanAubrie I live about 30 miles from B but she lives in a place with more useful stuff surrounding it than my rural backwater so no bother for me to find an excuse to drive there – as if seeing Bill wasn't enough!

It's really nice that you met up and the dogs had such a great time 🙂

Bupster · 04/11/2024 19:52

@PyreneanAubrie It was such an absolutely lovely morning. Bill has now been taught the Way of the Spaniel though and has jumped into every single muddy puddle he can find ever since 😄

PyreneanAubrie · 04/11/2024 20:04

I love it! I can definitely picture Bill doing that @Bupster and I also take it to mean that you are now an honorary Spaniel Woman 😂Break out the tweeds and Barbour!!!😉

lookwhatyoumademedoo · 04/11/2024 20:04

That's lovely that you and pups met up and had a great time! It's lovely to watch them play together isn't it. I always hope there's another off lead dog wanting 5 minutes of play when we're on a walk, it's the highlight of Maxs walk when there is.

PyreneanAubrie · 04/11/2024 20:05

My DogChilde is playing with her ball in the living room...next door will possibly wonder if we've taken up clog dancing 🙄

Atta boy! We'll get him swimming soon grins

And yes, @PyreneanAubrie, @Bupster is certainly a Spaniel Woman (TM) now. I actually turned up in almost full SW regalia – albeit avec crocs which slightly ruined the ensemble.

brushingboots · 04/11/2024 21:10

@lookwhatyoumademedoo I am a strict dog mother and don't let pupsy interact with that many other dogs, but when she sees her friends (which now include Bill) it is just the best. Spaniel on spaniel play is so gorgeous too as they seem to know how to play with each other properly and you know they're evenly matched.

All are welcome to join our real-life coven if anyone is local or wants to travel. We're in Lincs.

Sounds like you might live not far from where I grew up 😊

brushingboots · 04/11/2024 21:58

@tizwozliz If it's flat enough to be virtually concave then it might well be!

tizwozliz · 04/11/2024 22:18

Not quite as flat as a pancake where I was, edge of the wolds, north lincs/lincs border.

Aha! We are in Belvoir country. I had cause to go up to near Brigg for work recently and took pupsy for a lovely walk in Twigmoor Woods while we were there. The journey up the A15 there nearly drove me to distraction, mind.

tizwozliz · 05/11/2024 08:36

I'm North Notts/Derbyshire border now, tend to drive to my parents via Retford and Gainsborough to avoid the monotony that is the a15 or the m180.

Twigmoor is nice, we've been a couple of times when visiting parents.

YorkshireFelix · 05/11/2024 08:42

@tizwozliz I am originally from North Notts! A town very near Retford beginning with W 😃

Bupster · 05/11/2024 08:43

I'm up on top of the big steep hill, @tizwozliz - so nearly in between where you were and where you are now. Bill is still a misery in the car (though he is getting better) so it was really lovely that @brushingboots came up here to spaniel.

Which reminds me that I need to take him out in it more often do do fun stuff...

brushingboots · 05/11/2024 08:53

@YorkshireFelix I certainly know the place of which you speak! I grew up on the Gainsborough side of the place with the big steep hill so probably not that far from you really – my best friend and I used to convene at the McDonald's at Markham Moor once we'd learned to drive!

@tizwozliz, I'm guessing you must have a variety of big estates nearby/to walk on where you are, if my geography is correct? I write about them for a living so am inclined to plot the country via the medium of landowners; I am that sad.

@Bupster If you can get him down here pupsy can really spoil him with her spanielling opportunities – we are overrun with fabulous walks. But we have plenty to do your way too while he's learning to love the car. Slowly slowly catchy monkey, as it were.

tizwozliz · 05/11/2024 08:59

Yes, we are really spoilt for choice where we are. I don't really think I appreciated just how much there is until we got our first pup. Lots of pockets of woodland, Clumber, Rufford, Sherwood, Budby (watch out for the naturists), Welbeck, Thoresby, Newstead

YorkshireFelix · 05/11/2024 10:29

My parents still live there and walk their dog at Clumber! I've not taken V yet but I'm sure he will love it when we do. I didn't really appreciate how many parks there were when I lived at home (moved out at 18!) and would LOVE to have so many on my doorstep now. Although I have the moors so I guess it's a decent trade off. It's just extremely hilly here instead which I hate 🤣

tizwozliz · 05/11/2024 11:07

Pup had her first full walk round the lake this past weekend, we normally stick to quieter parts.

@tizwozliz she looks so happy! Gorgeous 😍

brushingboots · 05/11/2024 11:43

Ahhh I love Clumber! She looks so pleased with life.

I went to Welbeck for work last year and took pupsy and we found Creswell Crags by accident – was super cool. Clumber is only about 40 mins up the A1 from us and I ought to make an effort to go there more as it really isn't very far. I haven't tried Newstead but I've written a load about Byron recently so I should go and explore it! A useful reminder of those, thank you!

We can walk into Newstead and do a 10km loop with most of it off lead from home. It's probably going to be our Christmas day walk this year. Our older dog is Ada after Ada Lovelace.

brushingboots · 05/11/2024 13:01

Oh what a fab namesake!

Pupsy is named after a bridge in the Netherlands, and every time we go to the vets they look quizzically into the waiting room while attempting to pronounce it (though it isn't that difficult really). Answers on a postcard...
