Bought wrong dog food - is my common sense idea right

Bought and stupidly opened AVA medium dog without realising. My boy is a large. I am pretty sure I can't return it to Pets at home now it's open.

Now, as my boy is still in the 20-30kg dog weight bracket ( 25-30kg dog is listed on the "large" bag as a smallest sized dog for that food), surely it's fine to just give him the correct weight in food as I have been, even with the medium breed stuff) the chunks are just thinner so not as dense. I weighed it all out this morning to ensure he got the right amount.

I know this sounds like an overthink but money is v tight right now, so am hoping to avoid purchasing another £50 bag.

He also has a bit of Butchers tripe loaf with his breakfast.

I think you are massively over thinking this. Feed your dog the amount it says on the bag for the weight he is?

Xtraincome · 21/09/2024 19:52

Completely overthinking yes. I never overthink this stuff. But we are saving like the clappers and I just naturally assumed this is what one does in this situation 😆

Thank you for just agreeing with my train of thought @UpUpUpU

Go to Lidl and buy tinned fish to add to his food.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 21/09/2024 19:56

It's absolutely fine.

Our dog just gets whatever decent kibble is on offer - at the moment she's on Markus Muhle Black Angus "junior/mini" version because it was cheaper than the adult version, but has almost identical ingredients and slightly smaller kibble pieces. She seems happy. Before that she was getting Purizon Fish 80/20 and before that a bargain bag of Eden Working Dog.

Don't overthink it! They're natural scavengers who'd be fine living off roadkill and cat shit if left to their own devices 🤢

I’m another one who thinks your dog will be absolutely fine if you just follow the guidelines on the bag. I know some people are ultra careful about what they feed dogs but we used to give our old Lab different stuff sometimes & he was always perfectly happy with it.

ScattyHattie · 21/09/2024 20:20

Not sure if still the case but pets at home used to be good for refunding/exchanging if not satisfied, i.e opened and tried but dog didn't get on with the food. The opened stuff would then get donated to local rescues to use up.

I doubt it will make much difference if nutritionally similar and more kibble size. I'd only worry if I picked up puppy instead of an adult version, I made mistake of buying senior once which ended up more costly as I had to feed more of it to keep weight on.

ACynicalDad · 21/09/2024 22:23

If you’ve got any of the old stuff left try to transition it over a few days but I’d think there’s not a lot of difference so I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Oh wow more posts overnight!

Thanks so much all. Am very thankful that my Bulldog has been ok with the same food/brand.

Tinned tuna from Lidl has been added to the list @justasking111

thankfully it was just dog size.

Thanks so much all.

Photo for reference. Dog not food. 😄

It's almost certainly only kibble size that differs. I'm currently feeding my small dogs large dog food because they enjoy crunching the bigger pellets.

He’s gorgeous! Thanks for paying the dog tax 😉

Well, whatever you're feeding him he looks very happy about it!
