Dog anxiety in the car

Shallysally · 10/09/2024 13:41

Our dog gets anxious in the car on longer journeys. I’ve been sitting with him which does help.

We’ve tried a CBD spray on his blanket with limited effect.

Ive been looking at the Adaptil range, they do a pheromone spray and chews that have different ingredients in them.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

I’d say he’s likely feeling sick - have you asked the vets re: an anti emetic he could take before long journeys? That and plenty of rest breaks

I’d not thought about feeling sick. All the signs he is showing, panting and shaking, point to anxiety but I agree he could be travel sick.

We do stop fairly regularly on longer journeys.

Those signs all point to nausea too - I'd kept him seen at the vets 🥰

Thanks both, I’ll get him booked in.

One of ours hates the car and does this. She's driven 10 hours in a day before and not been sick, not ever actually so I don't think it's nausea. Plus she's fine if she's on someones lap! She shakes getting in there, she is just afraid.

I'm going to buy this car bed from funky fuzzy when I get paid as I think they'll both like feeling a bit more enclosed.

After looking at symptoms of car sickness I’m pretty sure it’s not that.

Thank you @RhubarbCircles! We’re away on holiday so can’t order anything but have been to B and M and bought a non padded seat they sell which is the same sort of thing, bought a duvet to provide height and padded the seat with his blanket. Hope it works 🤞🏻

You might be a bit past this stage now but what worked for our pup was reward based training. So we did a small journey daily like for 10 mins then build the length of it. Any time he didn’t cry we said yes and gave him a treat, then kept giving them while he was quiet. You could try high value like cheese or meat?
He now travels great in one of the above funnyfuzzy seats and sleeps.
not sure if it’ll help or wether he’s too anxious to respond to treats now.

Shallysally · 11/09/2024 10:41

@ANP2020 we still do treat based training/maintenance as it works so well to
keep him on track! I’ll take some cheese when we head out today, give him some before he gets in the car with lots of praise and again when he gets out.

So we’ve ditched the seat 🙈 put his bed on top of the duvet with his blanket over it. Several sprays of the CBS oil on the blanket and he is laid down and is a happy boy 😊

Thanks for all the suggestions!
