Cheapest way to get fluoxetine for my dog

A year ago , under the advice of a dog behaviourist, we put our reactive rescue dog on fluoxetine (Reconcile). It has really helped.

It is costing us about £60 per month via our vet. Our insurance won't cover the cost because of his history so we are having to pay ourselves. Sadly, due to some health issues I have had to reduce my work hours and tbh £60 per month is becoming too much to pay on top of our every day bills.

I have read some people are getting prescriptions off the vet and purchasing human fluoxetine for their dogs for a much cheaper fee. I have had a google but can not find such a thing.

Has anyone managed to purchase the drug cheaper this way? I don't know how we can continue paying £60 per month and our dog is so much better on them (we have previously weaned him off and he regressed, it was not fun).

Get your vet to provide a written prescription (they will charge a fee for this) and get the prescription filled by an online pet pharmacy. For example:

I work at a vets , if your dog was on the much cheaper fluoxetine before reconcile and you feel the fluoxetine had a better response you may be able to ask the vet to write the script for fluoxetine, as the vet is legally allowed to supply an off licence drug if that suits the dog better , this would be even cheaper than buying reconcile on a written script.
If reconcile was given as the initial drug it may be worth speaking to your vet regarding your financial situation around the meds and they may find a way around things.

Thanks. Our dog has always been on Reconcile, we were never offered a cheaper alternative. Sadly, our practice isn't interested that we can't afford to continue with the drug.

Still may be worth asking at your next consult , vet won't lose out as written script charge will be the same either way .

My dog is on fluoxetine 20mg and the pills cost £17 for 60 tablets from the vet. They are human ones. I would either ask your vet for these or go elsewhere as you definitely don’t need to pay that.
