Strange behaviour after a groom

My dog was groomed last Saturday and has been very strange since. He has been groomed many times already and never reacts well. He is sitting a lot and curving his spine, rolling around pavements any really unsettled. He has hip dysplasia which I thought was controlled but now not sure?? Any advice? He is almost 4

Sounds to me as if he might be in pain.

Maybe when he's being groomed the groomer pulls him in some way and it's affected his hips.

If it were my dog I'd get the vet to check him out.

I sometimes wonder if they use scented shampoo it upsets them.... isn't their sense of smell way way more sensitive than ours?

Beth216 · 20/08/2024 20:03

Is he rolling around on pavements trying to itch? Could he be sensitive to something that they wash him with? I wouldn't take him back there if he keeps reacting like this.

Happynow · 20/08/2024 20:07

Yes, I think pain too. My dog had similar symptoms once or twice and hip issues which seemed to clear up later in his life. Can't remember the name of the painkiller given by vet ... very common and sorted him out quickly.

I’m taking him tomorrow, I think he is very itchy aswell, he has done similar things before which resolved after about 5 or 6 days. Is him curving his spine round that is worrying me most

Good you're going to your vet.

Most groomers really don't know how to move dogs properly - not their fault because if you don't routinely deal with a dog who has arthritis or dysplasia then you don't know (it's just one of those things). It's entirely possible the groomer accidentally hurt him whilst trying not to - it might not even by the dysplasia tbh (in the sense that she/he was trying to move the dog comfortably and just twinged one of the dogs muscles etc).

He is on anti inflammatory and dog paracetamol anyhow. He has had gabapentin before which seems to help?? We are supposed to be having a weekend away on Friday and he is coming!

Agree with pp about the scented products.

My dog isn't shampooed by the groomer as I just have her nails cut every so often but the used to brush her and once or twice used, what I assume to be, some sort of brush in conditioner.

I found the awful, artificial smell overwhelming when I picked her up from them and it took days for the smell to wear off, so god knows what it did for my poor dog's sense of smell.

Dogs really need to smell like dogs. I imagine that smelling like some sort of nasty scented candle really messes with their sense of self.

*Meant to say that it also made her itchy.

Hello i took my dog to the vet a d she couldnt find anything wrong. His hips were ok, no diff to normal, his right is the worst. She checked his bottom, no scratches, anal gland empty. But here i am still so worried! Lunch time walk today was awful, he rolled around and sat down loads!! We are going away for the weekend with him tomorrow and worried its going to be spoilt with me worrying!

Do you think it could just be that he's itchy from the products used?

Rolling definitely sounds like he's uncomfortable and the sitting down, again, could just be that he's feeling a bit weird.

Did the vet look at his skin?

Not very helpful, I know, but do you think giving him a bath to see if it gets rid of the stuff from the groomers might be an idea?

It's difficult when you don't get a definite answer from the vet.

Hope he feels better soon.

I wonder if it may help to see a dog physio?

Lhh74 · 25/08/2024 21:47

He has had a bath and bit hasn’t helped. I still don’t know what to do with him? He was chasing his tail earlier! I am still worried but just don’t know what to do
