Hello everyone,
We’re back with our “Dog of the Month” thread in partnership with Pedigree® to celebrate our four-legged pals! 🐾

How It Works:

  • Post a photo and story about your dog.
  • Each month, we’ll pick a “Dog of the Month” to be featured on Instagram.
  • The winner gets a Pedigree® prize bundle worth around £100.

Important Notes:

  • Photos and stories will only be used on Mumsnet channels and not for the brand’s Marketing purposes. We’ll ask for your permission before posting the winner on Instagram.
  • We’re celebrating the joys of dog adoption and the positive impact of dogs. Thanks for participating!

And let’s not forget a big cheer for last month’s winner, Dougie! 🐶❤️ Dougie’s story truly warmed our hearts, and we’re excited to see who will take the spotlight this month.

Meet Sandor! DH and I couldn’t decide which type of dog to get. Our old boy Robbie was starting to get into his later years and we wanted a puppy to learn how to be an amazing dog, because Robbie really was the best dog ever. DH wanted a Rottweiler and I wanted a beagle. As a compromise we went for a mixture of the two and got ourselves a Reagle. He’s named after a character from Game of Thrones whose nickname was the hound. Sandor certainly learned how to be a great dog as he’s so calm and chilled. Loves his family and his cats, long walks with his dog mates and trying to pinch the cats food!
I have Complex PTSD and EUPD. Sandor is my best friend. He listens to me and gives the best hugs (puts his feet on my shoulders and snuggles into my neck). He’s been through some tough times with me and earlier this year we sadly lost his best friend Robbie, but his daft smile helps brighten up my day ❤️

Meet Squiggle, the chocolate hunter. She is recovering from 18 months of Chemotherapy for Meningitis and Encephalitis. She is affectionately known as the ‘chocolate eating dog’ at the vets, due to her ability to hunt out chocolate and virtually scale walls to get to it!
She spends her days doing her job, which is to cuddle Mum who suffers from several chronic illnesses.
She’s a real sweetheart, but will release her inner Lion, to protect her family from dangerous fellows like the postman, who is terrified of her!

Meet our boy Chester. The happiest little fella. He’s 9 today! He’s helped our family in more ways than I can count.

This photo is from a few years ago on a family holiday to Charmouth. He was having the time of his life running up and down the hill. The smile says it all.

My wonderful mother suffers with an awful condition called Neutropenia. Our dear boy Chester does not leave her side when she has a flare up. He is an angel in disguise!

Our sweet boy!

This Barkley, a now 8 year old cockapoo. He was originally bought and trained as an autism and medical assistance dog for my two sons. Now they are adults we have retrained him as my medical assistance dog (I have Lupus and am quite often housebound for weeks at a time after hospital admissions). This photo was taken the first time he bought me the post, unprompted, and laid each letter onto my bed one by one. He has enriched our family beyond all our hopes, bringing love and laughter into a home previously struggling with complex needs. He carries out many tasks around the home including picking up laundry, delivering post, opening and closing doors, and lots more. Oh and he is also bilingual, as my husband, who is from South America, has taught him all the commands in Spanish too!

This is Quincy! I have ms and had to give up on my dream of a springer spaniel as I couldn’t keep up with the exercise. I did some research and was recommended a Shih Tzu by someone else who had ms, as they do not need long daily walks. Quincy is our second Shih Tzu, he has a lot of character and loves cuddles 🥰

This is my dog, Lumie, who is a Cockapoo and 5 years old. I’ve had anxiety all my life, but when I first got her, my anxiety had gotten worse after one of my close friends suddenly dying in the middle of the night. I was struggling to sleep in fear of something happening to me. Lumie was allowed in our room and on the bed from the start and whenever I’d lie awake, she’d come over to my pillow and sleep above my head, unprompted. If I fidgeting, she’d place all four paws on me and sometimes lick my head. Her peaceful snores helped me sleep better each night and there’s been other occasions she’s calmed me down during anxiety attacks. She truly is a companion.

This is our gorgeous girl, Molly.
Molly is a rescue dog who we adopted from Dog's Trust, Darlington. We're not totally certain of her age but think she is 9 now. She is a Lurcher (she is like a slightly smaller greyhound).
I have MS and had to retire from work when I was only 36 as my illness progressed rapidly. I was devastated and the thought of being home alone every day was awful. We only popped in to DT for a look but as soon as we saw her there was an instant connection.
She gives me a reason to get up every day (to feed her, let her out, give her big cuddles etc.). We'd all be lost without her.
This is a picture of her doing one of her favourite things, running (she also loves sleeping!). People think sighthounds need lots of exercise but that is totally not true. Hence they get the nickname '40mph couch potatoes'!

I don't have a dog but recently I got to draw some beautiful girls for a book called Rupee and Sushi Travel by Train. It's based on the author's real life dogs and it helps people like me (disabled) and younger access the train safely.

It's just such a beautiful idea- if I won, I'd send it their way. Pay it forward.

This is Poppy, our 4 year old miniature poodle. I was never a dog person until, during March 2020, I gave in to the persistent demands of my two sons and husband and agreed to get a dog. Poppy has changed my attitude completely. She's the sweetest most loving girl equally happy climbing a mountain or spending a day cuddling on the sofa. I had no idea of the unconditional love that dogs give until Poppy came along. I'll always be so glad that I gave in.

ObieJoyful · 28/08/2024 08:34

This is Obie- full name ObieJoyful.

Obie is (we think) a Poodle/Bichon cross of around 9 years old. He came to live with us three years ago. When he first arrived, he was a frightened little soul who couldn’t walk very far, or climb up our doorstep. Obie is missing a back leg. I thought I needed to put a ramp on the stairs so that he could get up there…

But then Obie discovered walks! He rapidly became walk obsessed! We live next to a river, and each day I’d wade in with him and make him swim back to the bank, to strengthen his three legs. He began to run, with his remaining back leg whirling in helicopter fashion- the joy evident throughout his little body.

His full name came from an elderly gentleman who asked me his name as he watched him run. I replied, ‘Obie’ - the gentleman clapped his hands together and exclaimed, ‘ObieJoyful!!’

His name on arrival was actually Johnny, but that’s my son’s name, and selfishly, he refused to let us change his 😁.

This little dog has summitted Scafell Pike, amongst other mountains. He snuggles up to me in my bivy bag on wild camps, or in my camper van. He is thoroughly an outdoor dog now, and I love every moment we spend together.

My life is so much fuller for having him in it 🤍.

Tarkan · 30/08/2024 16:45

This is Tarkan (hence my user name here). Also known as Tark and Tarky. Or Baby.

He's a rescue dog from Romania and he's around 10 years old. He had already been adopted in the UK before we got him, he started not getting on with his last owner's other dogs though so the charity he came here through looked for an emergency adoption and we were selected. We've now had him for almost 3 years.

His favourite things are going to the beach (something he had never seen before we adopted him) and going to the pet shop and pub (he will literally drag you in if you try to walk past one 🙈🤣). He's obsessed with buses and if a bus stops and opens the doors as you're walking past then he'll just get on. But as soon as he's on he wants off again, I think he thinks they're magic portals to wherever he wants to go. 😁

He loves all of our family to bits but especially our autistic 16 year old. He helps calm them down during a bad day just by being his amazing soft fluffy self.

He's also obsessed with comfort and his record for DH leaving the room and Tarkan stealing DH's seat is a mere 7 seconds.

The only downside to him is that you can't leave the remains of a roast chicken in the kitchen as the entire thing will magically vanish in complete silence and unbelievably quickly. We keep the kitchen door closed now. 😁

He also likes to lie with his legs crossed and he makes a heart shape when he does so. ❤️
