Setting the ball rolling on a new thread as the last one has reached 1k 😊.

Brodie had his first proper bath today...
I don't think he was overly impressed!

He'll be 6 months old on Tuesday. I can't believe how the time has passed, or how far along we've come.

To everyone who is struggling at the moment, stick with it, it really does get easier.

@YorkshireFelix same 🤣🤣 I know GRs are renowned for the shedding so this will bite me in the ass

AubrieDog · 04/10/2024 17:18

@brushingboots
Aaaarrrggghhh! Green algae covered pup does not sound like fun! Did you have to hose her down? I hope she's not still green...

Our very first pup once went in the park lake after it had been drained and came home black and stinky, we had to bath her outside. The pong was awful!

I hope your girl has fun with the Springador, that will be interesting. I imagine as it's a younger dog she should it be okay about it being on her territory though...

The Moor Gazing Pup.

She is so pretty!

(all the pups are gorgeous of course)

Bupster · 04/10/2024 18:16

@brushingboots do tell us all about the Springerdor as well as your green spaniel! The only crossbreed Lab/spaniels I know are Bill and his siblings, I'd love to hear what kind of character it is.

@YorkshireFelix I'm still here too. Bill is very definitely still a pupper, it's just quite handy knowing what's in store 😄

I've been really rubbish at keeping up with his training. It's like we've fallen into a decent routine now and he has just enough training to do the things we actually need to do, and now I just basically want to play with him or lounge around holding one end of an 'orrible chew when he's awake, and attempt to do a week's worth of work when he's asleep. The thought of actually training him to do anything new, or even practicing old things we don't use regularly, is exhausting. Which I know is silly because we desperately need to work on loose lead walking, and settling, and I can think of a hundred other things we probably should do, and I just can't be arsed.

Here's Bill in much the same mood. Sorry if I've posted it before, it just makes me laugh.

@brushingboots oh nooo how did you clean her after that?!

I do say kind of ok but actually his later walk is usually 80% brilliant. I've realised he will do anything for a higher value treat too which is handy to know. I think our first walk of the day is always just going to be wild for now as it's too exciting to finally be out of the house. We just did a few retrieves on the field and a mostly off lead walk before tea and he was the best, apart from when he gets a scent of something and his nose is firmly stuck to the ground, then his ears magically stop working!!

@AubrieDog she is sooo beautiful and looks majestic on that photo! I've not managed to get Vinny up on the moor yet as it's just slightly too far a walk until he's a bit bigger. His breeder works his 6 cockers up there so I'm hoping one day we will bump into them and he can see his Mum.

@Bupster I have been lurking on the adolescent thread and reading all the posts like a weirdo for the same reason!! Plus it's nice to know how everyone's pups are doing. I am the same with trying to fit work in to the small window when he's asleep and training seems to come sporadically. I have to force myself to remember to do it but it's hard to find the time and often it seems like a chore. We are starting a puppy basics class with a local gundog trainer next week so I'm hoping that will help focus me a bit more.

Soz for all the pics but V enjoying his walk just now. He is too cute.

@Twiglets1
Thank you. She is a sweet girl. A very bright one too!

@YorkshireFelix
Thank you. She loves being up there, just looking around, watching the sheep and deer. We cheat - we drive over to the edge of the moor then it's a manageable walk for Brie. We could walk there from home with the adult dogs but it'll be another year before we'll do that with Brie. She is already huge but we are still mindful of the fact that she is only 6 months old.

It would be lovely for you to meet up with Vinny's mum when he's a bit older. I reckon he will love being up on the moors too.
He is gorgeous, your boy, that photo is so cute 😍

JessiesHuman · 04/10/2024 19:09

@YorkshireFelix good to hear how well he's doing and still super cute!

@AubrieDog I feel that pic should be in a dog calendar or something!

@Bupster he looks like a completely adorable pup!

Zeus is growing SO fast - I'm going to have to get him another harness as he's outgrowing the one he has.

We've had zero accidents in the house for three days - long may it continue! When he wakes up from a nap I say 'wee wees' in a high pitched voice and he zooms out to go. The cat has now become excited when she hears this, as she knows that when he does a wee he gets a treat and so does she.

He's brilliant on walks, and today met the next door neighbours dog. She's a very excitable rescue from Ukraine. She growled at him a bit but he did not give a monkeys. I hope they can be friends though as my NDN is really lovely and it would be great if we could do walks together.

You don't need to apologise for the photos @YorkshireFelix I love seeing everyone's pup photos😀

Will try to load another one of Roman tomorrow, he's 18kg now & not even 5 months old yet!

AubrieDog · 04/10/2024 19:26

Awww, that is so good about the toilet training @JessiesHuman What a bright little chap Zeus is to get the hang of outside wees so quickly. I like the idea that your cat gets a treat too, sounds like a good bit of bonding going on there. Very cute photo, I notice the cat sneaked into the pic too 😆

Re Brie being a Calendar girl - I suppose she is a bit of a poser 🙄

YorkshireFelix · 04/10/2024 19:45

@JessiesHuman it's so nice to hear how well Zeus is doing! He's such a little cutie. One thing we a NOT nailing is toilet training but I am sure we will get there so trying not to stress. Zeus (and the cat) is so clever ❤️

brushingboots · 04/10/2024 19:53

@YorkshireFelix @AubrieDog She went straight in the bath, and to be fair she jumped in so I think she knew it was coming!

Hooray for off lead V! Watching them nose down is the greatest joy of spanielling, I think. One of the gundog skills I found most fun to teach was ‘back’ – it’s used a lot in the field when they’re working but at home you can use it on more banal tasks – to get them to turn around and pick up stuff they’ve left behind, ie stolen socks/toys that need tidying from the garden. My trainer gave me a really good method for it and I genuinely use it as a skill all the time – can type it out for you if you want something new to try.

Pupsy is really good with other dogs being in her space and sharing her toys/chews, so I’m not worried about that – it’ll just be really interesting to see how she reacts to a dog being more of a puppy, as I still think of her as teeny tiny, when of course she isn’t really now. I will fill you all in on Sunday!

@Bupster Another of my friends has a springador actually and she’s very labby in all ways – looks and temperament. You wouldn’t think there was any spaniel there, which is weird. It’s absolutely fine to not be arsed about training all the time, I reckon. Sometimes you just have to get through the week, and he’s still a baby so you have loads of time.

I feel a bit sad tonight. Was on a walk with my friend when we bumped into local Spaniel Man and his wife, who are friends of ours, plus their dog. SM was on the phone and, unusually, his wife let their dog off the lead and he came to play with our group. Suddenly I was taken with a flash of irritability and said to her, ‘oh puppins isn’t allowed to play with him so I’ll just keep her away.’ (Every time we see him now, including at their house, SM makes it clear that his dog is NOT a dog that plays, or that goes on ‘walks’, since he is a Serious Working Dog and is Only Allowed To Do Training Sessions, and every time I see him he makes me feel about an inch high about it – all of this despite the fact that they have known pupsy her whole life.) Anyway, his lovely wife had no idea what I was talking about and said, ‘I can’t believe that’s true, I've never noticed that’, and now I feel like a total cowbag, but he does make me feel small every single time. Maybe she’ll tell him and he’ll get some self-awareness. Probably not though. I’m not at all wet in real life despite how that sounds but I just hate the thought of having any kind of animosity with anyone, ever. And especially over something dumb like that. I always say you can only train the dog in front of you but maybe I should take my own advice and let that apply to people too. Ugh.

I promise you will get there with toilet training – I honestly think pupsy was five months ish by the time she was solid and it might have been later. Have blanked out the horror tbh but there's no way she was good to go at 16 weeks so worry not.

You'll get there!

The cat is very clever. We had a bit of a clear out in the lounge. We (stupidly) relocated the cat and dog treats to a drawer by the cat tree. She's learnt how to open the drawer 😂

YorkshireFelix · 04/10/2024 19:57

@brushingboots he sounds like a tit and I can almost guarantee he probably said that to you because you're a woman, and he probably doesn't say it to male dog owners! Just ignore ignore ignore!!

You are of course right! It's just one of those things that feels like a scab that I can't stop picking. Am currently being writhed around on by said pupsy so at least there's that!

YorkshireFelix · 04/10/2024 21:35

Also how bloody joyless does not allowing your dog to play with other dogs sound!

brushingboots · 04/10/2024 22:32

@YorkshireFelix well exactly. Even at their own house he gets shut inside if we're there in the garden! Apparently it affects his training too much. My eyes cannot roll enough

BrodiePup · 05/10/2024 16:47

Probably stating the flipping obvious here, but don't forget this thread will finish at 1000 posts...someone needs to start the next.

TO ALL NEW PUPPY PARENTS...IT WILL GET BETTER ❤️

How is everyone doing?

Been to the vets for a check up and V is 9.5kg now. I think he's going to be big when he's fully grown. The vet commented on his shiny coat and two separate people on our walk earlier did too so we must be doing something right.

Had a lovely weekend with dd agreeing to join us on our walks. She is autistic and hypermobile and not the most outdoorsy girl but she discovered V likes to chase after her if we let him off lead and she loved it. It was so nice seeing them run about together. Hopefully it encourages her to come out with us a bit more. The joy he has brought her in such a short space of time has been so worth the difficulty of rearing a puppy!!

We start our puppy life skills class on Sunday which I am really looking forward to.
