Recommend a decent wet food for dogs that doesn't cost the earth?

They're currently on Millies Wolfheart dry but to get them to eat it I have to add warm water and a topper.

I'd rather just move to wet food which they gonwild over.

But something chicken free.

Also the game and other fancier ones on butternut box are extra too. All adds up

magicstar1 · 18/08/2024 14:36

Yes it adds up alright. I pay €103 every two weeks, including Butternut treats, but cans of food were working out at €10 per day so for me it works out.

Hopefully someone else will have a better suggestion.

Butchers are the ones that I was just complaining about, they say beef but it's 42% chicken!

Ah, sorry.
Field and Trial wet food is pretty decent, and the Lamb and Salmon varieties don't seem to include any chicken (I've just looked at the ingredients).

Edited to add: it's basically a very soft pate, not large chunks that might be too much for small dogs.

Forthglade.
My Westie is in perfect health at 8 and wolfs it down

Allient · 18/08/2024 15:13

Another vote for Forthglade. My dog can't eat chicken and has a very sensitive system. Forthglade seems to agree with her and yes lots of deals.

Skybyrd · 18/08/2024 15:16

Have you tried different dry foods? My very fussy dog (young golden retriever-go figure) refuses most 'good quality' wet and dry foods foods but absolutely loves CI dog foods kibble. It's British, good quality and a reasonable price. They'll also send free samples if you email them. We've settled on their Tickety boo range as it's moderate protein, seems to be her favourite and has a good range of different flavours.

She also used to like nature's menu tins (fed separately from her kibble), which are a bit more pricey but are available in chicken free ranges, but we changed to Butchers because we sometimes struggled to get the natures menu tins and she isn't a dog that likes change.

Emmerdaleaddict · 18/08/2024 15:17

I get Wolf of the Wilderness or Rocco from Zooplus

DarkForces · 18/08/2024 15:19

We use Rocco from Zooplus too. Loads of flavour options

Floralnomad · 18/08/2024 15:20

Nature diet , suits mine , he has the senior light and the mixed pack for variety . I get it from Amazon on subscribe and save .

BigBundleOfFluff · 18/08/2024 15:34

Mine can't have chicken either but is not fussy so can't help with that. We do Millie's wolfheart dry with a bit of forthglade/scrumbles/natures menu/barking heads mixed in.
We periodically get 40% off forthglade code and I bulk buy then. Otherwise it's what's on offer. All rated highly on all about dog food.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 18/08/2024 15:34

Naturo - good rating on Allaboutdogfood, not expensive and readily available in supermarkets.

Nature’s Menu - wide variety of flavours, lots without chicken. Not the cheapest but always deals to be had in bulk on Amazon etc

Lily’s Kitchen - as above, lots without chicken. Again, not the cheapest but when I used it I found I could always find deals somewhere when ordering online in bulk

GhibliCat · 18/08/2024 16:55

Where are people getting the forthglade deals please? Especially the 40% off!

OP posts:
GhibliCat · 18/08/2024 17:05

Oh can get 96 forthglade 395g dor £75 that will last us well over a month

Is it worth buying without knowing they like it though 😅

GhibliCat · 18/08/2024 17:12

NUR404 is 40% off BTW x

It's the new Sunday dinner range

Mine are on Millie's Wolfheart (duck and wild boar variety) as one doesn't tolerate chicken as the main ingredient. We also use Forthglade for toppers (they do loads without chicken) and mine seem to like it. They prefer the Country Hunter range by Natures Menu but at nearly £20 a box for 12 sachets I'm buying more of the Forthglade next time!

KitKatChunki · 18/08/2024 17:20

I fostered a very fussy greyhound for a few months and found that large tins of pilchards (B&M did full sized cans) were about 80p and on pilchard mashed up with biscuits usually meant the lot was eaten

That's what mine are on. Countryside mix but I have to mix hot water and pilchards into it or ham or something

I feed butternut boxes to my border collie, he is 25 kg and has 500g pouches each day, mixed with Wainwrights dry food. I get the maximum delivery of 28 days so this works out about £90. He has mainly beef, pork and turkey, plus a few lamb which is a bit extra, here’s my code for 60% off first box.
Check it out here: butternutbox.com/Mandy460?share_source=copy_link 🐶💛

CellophaneFlower · 18/08/2024 18:03

I was thinking of changing to forthglade but notice it contains carageenan, which is associated with gastro issues and cancer... so my search continues!

Coffee23 · 18/08/2024 18:26

Millies wolfheart do wet food as well that is highly rated. If they did well enough on the dry you could just move them onto the wet?

On Zooplus there is wolf of wilderness, Lukullus and Rocco wet food. All high meat content with no chicken recipes available. Lots of deals on there as well for multi packs.

forthglade is good and you can always find a discount code on google. I got 40% off my first order and then found a 30% off discount for my next just through googling ‘forthglade discount code’. They do duck, lamb, sardine flavours with no chicken or grain.

None of the above have what I call the hidden chicken content. I hate when they say single protein, only lamb and then half way down it says 4% chicken fat!

They don’t use it anymore, it’s not listed on the ingredients list. They now use dried seaweed as the binding agent for the pate after customer feedback on using Carageenan.

What dogs do you have? Because my Lab will eat anything so I would order it 🤣

AtTheTurnybus · 18/08/2024 18:41

Mine absolutely loves the Naturo wet dog food. They do tins and pouches.
I just checked the turkey recipe and there was no chicken in it, so you could look at those.
Sold in Tesco.

Oh really? It's still listed on the ingredients on allaboutdogfood. Will look into it. Thanks!

Chickenwing2 · 18/08/2024 19:33

We mix Millies dry with Millie's wet. It's a bit more expensive than just dry but not too bad! We give our dog 1 tin a day (half per meal) and the dry makes up the rest.
