Neighbour leaving dog alone all day

GloveIsland · 12/08/2024 15:42

I’m in London and it’s over 30 degrees today.
neighbour has gone out and left her back door open so his dog can come and go as he pleases, for some reason dog is outside even though it’s cooler indoors.

Ive never had dogs but it’s not fair to leave the dog all day is it? I know it’s too hot for walks but I just feel sorry for the dog all alone.

I'm more surprised your neighbour has left their back door open with no one in the house. Are you sure the dog is actually alone?

If the back door is open, chances are there's water inside. Some dogs like lying in the sun I suppose, my dog prefers lying in the shade when he's out.

Can't believe they've gone out and left backdoor open though. I would never ever.

People do leave their dogs alone all day, and usually without the option of going out!
I have two dogs - both are sprawled at my feet with maximum body contact to floor. I also have two long haired cats. Equally spread eagled on the flagstone terrace.
I leave my back door open if at home - the dogs are good at warning if anything from a bird to fox enters the garden, but not if out! London terrace.

Depends how big the dog is!

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/08/2024 16:05

Is the back garden accessible? Ours has a 6ft wall / fence around it and no gate. Occasionally we might leave the back door open. I guess the neighbours can see in but no one else can. Maybe their garden is like ours?

My dog is stupid though and would sit in the heat until it passed out if allowed!

CuteCillian · 12/08/2024 16:05

My two dogs are both lying outside in the sun despite me sitting in the air-conditioned interior and the doors being wide open.

Sounds like your neighbours dog is making the most of a sunny day. As long as he has water and a shaded option he will be fine.

GloveIsland · 12/08/2024 16:43

I wouldn’t go out and leave my back door open either but the dog would deffo bark if someone approached or tried to get in.

Dog has access to water and there is lots of shade if needed.

You have your AC on and the doors open?! Madness!

OP lots of dogs like to lay in the hot sun. THey usually move to the shade when you're cooked.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 12/08/2024 16:58

If the dog has access to water, shade and the indoors, I can't see the problem.

Lots of dogs are absolutely fine on their own all day - especially with access to the garden so they can go to the toilet.

MN can be a bit strict about dogs being left alone, but honestly if a dog doesn't have separation anxiety they'll likely be absolutely fine.

It’s not ideal. But he’s kind of sacrificed the security of his home for the well being of his dog.
