My 3 year old whippet (who is in season) had (unprotected!) sex!!

Whippetinseason · 12/08/2024 14:39

My 3 year old whippet went into season when we were on holiday, whilst my son looked after her. I explicitly told him not to let her off the lead, but being a 24 year old lad (who knows it all!), he let her off the lead. She normally has fantastic recall but obviously being in season, she went out of his sight for about 5 minutes and by the time he found her, she had tied with an un-neutered male whippet!!!

Anyway, when she tied with the male, she was on day 11 of her season, so by my understanding, at the most fertile time. My son and the dog's owner had to just wait until they'd finished. The woman gave my son her number and was very apologetic but obviously it was my son's fault - no un-neutered male would miss this chance of course.

Now, the one mildly amusing thing about this is that she chose a beautiful KC registered whippet (like she is!) so at least she has taste (!). What are the chances of that!! I know this as I have been in touch with the owner - her whippet is a stud whippet who breeds lots, so he's proven 😖

This happened 6 days ago. What are the chances she is pregnant and how would I know? I've googled it of course, but it talks about ultrasounds etc.

She doesn't seem any different yet, although her nipples are a bit bigger than normal (this could be my imagination though).

I'm a mixture of fuming with my son as this is going to be bloody hard work and I work full time, but also a bit excited 😬 We had considered breeding her next year anyway, but now is not a good time as we move house next month!

Help!

I can’t work out whether OP thinks we are thick as 💩 or whether her DS thinks she is.

Educationexpert · 12/08/2024 17:02

This is hilarious. Please keep us updated OP and ignore the holier than thou brigade

HoppingPavlova · 12/08/2024 17:06

I’d get her to the vet asap for an emergency spay which will take care of everything all round, and then I’d charge your DS the vet cost.

If it is as you say, it was obviously some odd thing that 2 pure bred JC registered full whippets were off lead together in the same park, too odd to be true actually, and therefore planned by your son. Otherwise, it happened with some random dog but he thought you’d shout less if he told you it was a fantastical whippet boy, then when non-whippet puppies emerge you’d think they were too cute to shout at him at that point. Bright boy in a way. I’d get to the vet pronto.

unless you have a really big breed - which you need to wait till they are fully gown - you are advised to neuter as soon as you can once they are one. Dont quiet understand what your vet said about making your dog worse ? Its teh best thing you can do for your dogs overall health

I’ve always tried to be a responsible owner. I always put my dog on a lead if I see someone with their dog on lead. Even though I know he would ignore it, I think it shows manners.

I'm naive then to believe the vet. I assumed they would be all for neutering especially for the money.

We’ve been with the same vet practice for over twenty years so maybe time to find a new one.

MyStylish40s · 12/08/2024 17:09

OP, I think your son isn’t being entirely truthful with you Wink

Lovemusic82 · 12/08/2024 17:12

People saying OP would have had the dog spayed, maybe she planned on breeding from her? some owners like their bitches to have a planned litter?

Yes it was stupid of her son to let the dog off…..and what were the chances of her mating with another of reg whippet 🤔 but it is what it is.

OP came here for advice regarding the pregnancy (or possible pregnancy)? Obviously she should speak to the vet rather than being jumped on by MN telling her how irresponsible she is.

QueenBitch666 · 12/08/2024 17:13

The world doesn't need more dogs when shelters are full. Shame on you 😡

CaptainBeanThief · 12/08/2024 16:31

How devastated would op be if she got mongrels if her dog didn't tie with the lovely "KC whippet" 😏

it was genuinely an "accident", the chances that it just "happened" to be an uncastrated whippet are too low for credibility.

Either he's lying that it was a whippet or he's lying that it by accident (and he took her to a stud dog by arrangement).

lucylulululu · 12/08/2024 17:16

There are enough unwanted dogs in the world without adding more into the mix.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/08/2024 17:16

Not forgetting that there is a fairly high chance that an identically pedigree Whippet living in the same area is likely to be a sibling or other close genetic relationship.

Hardcametherain · 12/08/2024 17:16

Sunraysunday · 12/08/2024 15:13

Erm, sounds like this may shock a few PPs but there will be plenty of entire male dogs wandering about… the responsibility is on the owner of the dog in heat here, as OP recognises,
I’d be the same OP… half excited, half wtf 😂

Is that true throughout the UK? I live overseas but I have never come across this attitude before. When I lived in England I had horses and it was 100% the responsibility of the stallion's owner to keep him away from all mares.

Not all vets recommend this. My vet has recommended I leave my male dogs unneutered, for various health and behaviour related reasons, and I think advise not to neuter is becoming increasingly common. It's perfectly reasonable to have an adult dog unneutered, provided you take responsibility for that dog and avoid unwanted pregnancies, roaming etc.

sorry for me the health issues that can develop on un neutered dogs thhat can be prevented outweigh reasons not neutering.

CharlotteLucas3 · 12/08/2024 17:28

There are loads of unneutered dogs in my area, including one of mine. He’s very very calm and friendly with dogs and humans. My neutered dog yaps, especially at unneutered dogs. Anyway, my dog was all booked in for a castration and on the morning of the op the vet advised against it.

This thread is bonkers…they’re just puppies! Calm down.

birdsoeking · 12/08/2024 17:29

Yeah, this didn’t happen OP.

Neutering has been shown to increase the risk of every single cancer in male dogs apart from testicular (for obvious reasons), as well as increased anxiety related behaviour issues and nervousness based aggression.

Female dogs are much healthier for being spayed, but only if done at maturity.

People are rightfully upset because of unwanted and abused dogs in rescues.

The fact is there are loads of unwanted dogs in rescue centres which are struggling to find homes.

Itsgoingtobe · 12/08/2024 17:35

I’ve always neutered/ spayed my dogs but the view on neutering of male dogs has changed in recent years.
Current pup will not be neutered until fully grown at the earliest and possibly never. He’s a timid thing and Veterinarian advice is to not neuter until adult and not at all, if possible.
Health benefits of neutering are not as great as once thought. However, the obvious risks are unwanted pregnancies.
I will play it by ear over the next 12 months, but in 25 years of dog ownership neutering philosophy has definitely changed.

I didn't need a biology lesson.

I'm surprised that rescues have a lot of whippets. I only know two, but they are so relaxed and serene that I envy their owners and would've thought they'd be in demand. My half cocker/half springer is bonkers, and it's never more evident than when he's in the company of whippets.

Good luck to your girl, op, whatever the outcome.

Where I am whippets are extremely popular, established breeders have long waiting lists and pedigree pups go for £1k or more. Suspect that some do end up in rescue though because they are "fashionable". Maybe it varies by region. (Not relevant to OP though who is not an established breeder.)

OP, assuming this is real, if you go ahead the other owner will want the stud fee before agreeing to sign the KC documents. You may well find that they are unwilling to sign at all, given that this is not a planned mating and the reputation of their dog is at stake. So you may not be able to sell your pups as KC registered.

Give your vet a call and ask for some guidance on the health side.

Any sensible owner would book a vets appointment and have her spayed + abortion if required . Call me cynical but I find it absolute horse poo that your offlead in season whippet managed to locate an offlead stud whippet by chance .

Definitely this!

raincloudsandholidays · 12/08/2024 15:13

@Whippetinseason are you going to take your dog to the vet to get it checked? And will you spay and abort if they are pregnant or are you planning to continue the pregnancy? I would think very carefully as there is no benefit to your dog from having puppies, and could actually negatively impact their well-being

I got my dog spayed as soon as I could. But a lot of people say that having one litter is actually good for the dog, opposite of negatively impacting their well being!

Please have the chat with your dog about always using condoms when with unknown men! 😁
