My 3 year old whippet (who is in season) had (unprotected!) sex!!

My 3 year old whippet went into season when we were on holiday, whilst my son looked after her. I explicitly told him not to let her off the lead, but being a 24 year old lad (who knows it all!), he let her off the lead. She normally has fantastic recall but obviously being in season, she went out of his sight for about 5 minutes and by the time he found her, she had tied with an un-neutered male whippet!!!

Anyway, when she tied with the male, she was on day 11 of her season, so by my understanding, at the most fertile time. My son and the dog's owner had to just wait until they'd finished. The woman gave my son her number and was very apologetic but obviously it was my son's fault - no un-neutered male would miss this chance of course.

Now, the one mildly amusing thing about this is that she chose a beautiful KC registered whippet (like she is!) so at least she has taste (!). What are the chances of that!! I know this as I have been in touch with the owner - her whippet is a stud whippet who breeds lots, so he's proven 😖

This happened 6 days ago. What are the chances she is pregnant and how would I know? I've googled it of course, but it talks about ultrasounds etc.

She doesn't seem any different yet, although her nipples are a bit bigger than normal (this could be my imagination though).

I'm a mixture of fuming with my son as this is going to be bloody hard work and I work full time, but also a bit excited 😬 We had considered breeding her next year anyway, but now is not a good time as we move house next month!

Help!

Why? I deal with rescues they are at breaking point here and the types of dogs Op has are the most abused and the most unwanted across the country. What the Op has done makes me fume! Plus she sitting with her poor dog the past week and hasn't got it checked out by the vet!!! What i said is the polite word for her. Oh i dont believe she didn't know what her son was going to do

Sadly there are many people who are like this original poster around the country.

What are the chances of two such irresponsible owners of the same breed living in the same vicinity?

Yep. Unlikely.

CaptainBeanThief · 12/08/2024 15:20

So your in season whippet just managed to find a KC stud whippet male
Haha pull the other one, this was planned

This. And any normal person would book them into a vets to stop/remove the pregnancy

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 12/08/2024 15:51

If you're not 100% prepared for the potentially disastrous and painful side effects for you dog (including death, agonising medical treatment, killing her own pups etc.), then you should go to your vet asap and have them aborted (if she is pregnant).

FWIW my DP spent all day about a month ago at a clients house after the bitch (Labrador) killed all twelve of her pups and then attacked her owner. So, unless you're mentally and financially capable of handling that I would abort.

commonground · 12/08/2024 15:51

Tbf, lurchers and (ex racing) greyhounds are pretty prevalent in rescues, whippets less so as they are pretty low maintenance dogs - and are often sought ought with pedigrees etc (yes obvs there are exceptions).

And speaking of pedigrees - I'm curious that the breeder was apologetic rather than furious - how did she know your whippet was also a pedigree when this event was happening? (although not sure how she allowed it to happen tbh). I'm surprised she's not pursuing you for the stud fee.

Erm, sounds like this may shock a few PPs but there will be plenty of entire male dogs wandering about… the responsibility is on the owner of the dog in heat here, as OP recognises,
I’d be the same OP… half excited, half wtf 😂

Everybody knows there are lots of male entire dogs about , I know plenty . The issue with this saga is that this whippet just so happened to find in the same park an offlead stud whippet rather than some other breed .

EveningSpread · 12/08/2024 15:53

Why don’t you just take her to the vet and ask them?

StarShineHello · 12/08/2024 15:53

Bullshit.

A dog the exact same breed, who is a proven stud just happens to tie with your KCreg bitch at the exact right time in some random park?

🤣🤣🤣

FatmanandKnobbin · 12/08/2024 15:54

I'm curious as to why op messaged the woman, without knowing if her dog is pregnant or not anyways.

"Hey there, I believe our dogs had sex today, LOLZ"

Someone I know thought it would be cute to breed her dogs and have puppies.

She now has mum and 6x 4 month old puppies at home as she hasn't managed to find homes for them all

Speak to your vet.

Thats the only way, and they will probably have a crack at scanning her later on in the pregnancy (count the spines, easier to see than skulls).

I assume you do not want to end the pregnancy as if you did you'd not have waited a week to do anything, so theres really no future in labouring that point.

Get the stud dogs pedigree details - theres a good chance the stud dog owner will want you to pay a stud fee for these so you can register the puppies.

Whilst the Kennel Club registration is not any real guarantee of anything, it IS definitely better to have it than not, so do register these puppies.

Keep good accounts and records... as any income from the puppies is taxable income.

grumpypedestrian · 12/08/2024 15:37

On the off chance this is real, why are you asking advice on a forum when you should just take your dog to a vet who will give you professional and unbiased advice?

If the cost of a vet appointment is putting you off then wait till you see the cost for complications.

Is your dog insured?

A lot of insurers exclude obstetric complications from cover, so any problems would be on the OP.

whatsinanameeh · 12/08/2024 15:57

Take to the vet, neuter and end the pregnancy while early

Sell your fiction novel about the totally random chance mating with a same breed KC registered stud to pay for it

Thiswayforward · 12/08/2024 15:58

I think your son may have told you a story. I find it highly unlikely she would have mated with the same breed. No it’s not ideal timing if you’re moving. But likely she is pregnant. Have you spoken to your vet for advice? I think you have a bigger son problem as that was irresponsible. You are getting a lot of criticism for the unspayed dog but I know people who breed that never spay them. As long as she is well cared for and you were going to breed her anyway I don’t see why others are criticising. Whippets are a beautiful breed!

An acquaintance of mine thought it would be a lovely idea to breed her staff because she liked the thought of it having puppies. Bare in mind she had no pet insurance and no job, she didn’t foresee anything going wrong with a staff pregnancy. Well the bitch went into labour but couldn’t pass the pups, and my friend left her in pain for the best part of two days as she couldn’t afford to take her to the vet. In the end she did take her but dumped her there with no details and washed her hands of her so they couldn’t come after her for the money. They put the dog down and all the puppies died

PrincessPheebs · 12/08/2024 15:24

He's 24, as I said.

What does this mean? I had a mortgage at 24 (I’m 26 now!) and half of my friends were getting engaged/having babies!

Was just going to say the same. I would have known not to do that at 24!

Cadela · 12/08/2024 16:00

An off lead uncastrated top of the line male whippet you say?

Well obviously have the puppies and sell them and become a millionaire, how very lucky for you!

Wish my random daydreams came true like this.

Mademetoxic · 12/08/2024 15:44

There are so many dogs who need homes in rescue centres and people choose to not neuter/spay their animals.

There are valid reasons for not neutering a young dog.
Personally, I like my dogs to mature fully, mentally and physically, before I neuter them. There is some evidence that, for numerous breeds, it is better for their long-term health not to neuter young.

KathrynWheel · 12/08/2024 16:03

Floralnomad · 12/08/2024 15:10

Any sensible owner would book a vets appointment and have her spayed + abortion if required . Call me cynical but I find it absolute horse poo that your offlead in season whippet managed to locate an offlead stud whippet by chance .

Agreed

There isn't necessarily an issue with that.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/08/2024 16:08

This isn't going to be a long-running thread where your conveniently pedigree puppies are snapped up by excited Mumsnetters, OP.

Best delete, take her to the vet and stay off Gumtree and Facebook.

wetotter · 12/08/2024 16:09

You need to talk to your vet asap and see if an emergency spay is possible.

Pregnancy in dogs is usually confirmed by ultrasound - some sources say 3 weeks but 4+ is more usual. Vet will be able to tell you the timings they're happy with.

Unless you have top-flight insurance, the complications of pregnancy are not covered. Routine pregnancy care, puppy checks, micro-chipping and first vaccinations aren't covered. If the pregnancy cannot be halted, you need to have the local cost of a c-sec plus about a grand to hand. You also need to get a whelping pen, suitable bedding, possibly protection for your floors and idc things for the puppies (extra bowls, leads, collars, harnesses etc)

Also read up on care for pregnant bitches (when to supplement food, extra wormers) and how to spot signs of labour, and how to tell if something is going wrong.
