Melanoma?

My 5 year old cockapoo has had a small (about 1cm) black spot on his skin near one of his front legs for about 6 months now. Vet has had a look and thinks it's could be a melanoma, can't tell if it's cancerous and we agreed to watch and wait as he hates the vets and wouldn't tolerate being examined. It hasn't grown since we noticed it but I have noticed a back scab breaks off, I notice some crusting on his fur around it when I check it sometimes.
He's generally well in himself aside from allergies which he has medication for.
Does anyone have an experience of this and whether the scabbing if a good or bad sign? The spot is slightly raised but not a size where it would bother him

Thanks in advance

Hm, personally I wouldn't be very happy to watch and wait. Can the dog not be sedated and examined?

If it's cancer, the earlier it's treated the better - and cancer in dogs can have great outcomes if it's caught and removed in time.

You'll be kicking yourself if you waited and it ended up not being treatable as a result.

I'd get it removed asap

If you’re worried then get him sedated and back to the vets.

No one here can tell you if it’s cancerous - even those of us who are or were qualified vets and vet nurses. So any comments you receive are just going to exacerbate your worries, potentially needlessly
