Hello everyone, my beloved old greyhound had to be put to sleep as he had osteosarcoma. I know it was the right decision to let him go and I'm lucky that I've got so many wonderful memories of his time with us. He had the best life and was so spoilt.

I've already started looking at rescue sites because I can't bear the idea of being dogless. It brings me comfort to know I'll adopt another dog and give it a good life. DH feels it's too soon and in theory I agree with him, but emotionally I have this huge need to rehome another dog. Do any of you wise dog lovers have any advice?

Firstly sorry for your loss, its hard isn’t it! Personally as long as you know you definitely want another dog, it sounds like you can give a dog a good home that really needs one - and I think that might help heal your heart a little?

I’m sorry for your loss.
Personally I would wait at least a few weeks, but there’s no right or wrong.
Is there anything you’d like to do/holiday etc before taking on another dog.
Sounds like you’ll give the rescue a very loving home.

So sorry for your loss.

No one can really advise you. When to get another dog is a very personal decision. For me, I got one within a month of my last loss (even though I still had several others). Other people need years to be ready.

BUT everyone in the house has to agree, and if your DP isn’t ready or wants to wait a bit then you should wait until he is.

So sorry for your Loss. We lost our Old girl last August after 14 Wonderful Years. I vowed I would never have another Dog, but 4 Months later we bought our new Boy Home. As a Family we absolutely adore him and it was definitely the right decision for Us despite what I thought initially! I couldn't have got the same Breed or another Female after our Loss though, but that was personal preference Smile

I'm so sorry for your loss, it is heartbreaking.

You have to do what is right for you and if that is filling the void quickly then do it. We lost one of ours very young, 5 months which was devastating. We got another dog very quickly, some may not agree with it but we were so very sad and the hold that she left was just awful, we felt like we had so much love to give. There are so many beautiful dogs in rescue centres who are crying out for loving owners like you, and while you will never replace your lovely dog you will give another the chance of a new life and that is pretty special. Good luck!

You have a dog shaped hole in your life. There’s a dog in a rescue kennel waiting for his new mum. Why wait another day to meet each other?
