Chicken from stock with onion - toxic?

Bluebell247 · 02/08/2024 11:08

I cooked a chicken carcass with onion and carrot, stripped the meat and fed a small piece of the meat to my puppy.

I've just remembered that onions are toxic for dogs. I obviously won't feed her any more of the chicken but would this cause her problems?

Doubt it.

It's probably ok but you're right not to give any more. Also, stock is usually very high salt so also not good for dogs.

Phew thanks. There was no salt in the stock, just the meat veg and water.

It only takes a v. small amount of onion to present badly in dogs. So I would avoid doing it again - particularly for a puppy. But likely fine in this instance given it was only cooked with onion rather than you fed your puppy onion directly.

Likewise, avoid things like spaghetti sauces and chilli con carne - the number of dogs I used to see because their owners had thought they were being kind by giving them left-over chilli con carne. Every dog is different, of course, but some dogs are incredibly sensitive (as humans are) so its just better not to take the risk.

Only if you put salt in it. If you don't use salt to make stock, it's not high in stock!

Are you thinking of Oxo cubes?
