Dog incredibly sick :-(

Hi all,

Trying to distract myself. My dog has had diarrhoea since late Saturday. She had a bit of blood in the diarrhoea by Sunday evening so I took her to the out of hours vet who gave her medication.

Last night she pooed out a massive amount of blood and lots of blood clots so I again took her to the emergency vet. She again pooed out a massive amount of what looked like pure blood and blood clots at the vets. It stank of iron.

She’s been sedated with pain meds and fluids and has had an ultrasound. Didn’t find anything. She had blood tests and they took a stool sample. Not sure if they have the results yet. Was told she was very unwell and pooing lots of blood but stable overnight and they are still carrying out diagnostics, including with an imaging specialist.

I am so worried that they don’t seem to have any answers. Feel so guilty for not getting her admitted on the Sunday evening. She’s only 3 years old.

Anyone been through similar with a happy ending?

Oh no. I’m sorry. Has she been vaccinated for Parvo? It sounds very much like it could be. Hopefully the vet will find out what is going on.

How is your dog getting on @BeagleWoes ?

Melsy88 · 24/07/2024 11:55

I had something very similar when my dog was 1, and shes completely fine now! She was very unwell - constantly pooing blood, couldn't walk as was in agony and trying to poo constantly. Admitted to the vets for a few nights. It took months to figure out what was going on, but turned out to be an allergy to chicken. She'd eaten it for months with no side effects but apparently the impact can build up and hit them suddenly.
Wishing your dog well - its so worrying when they are unwell.

Sounds like it could be gardia (wrong spelling), which can be picked up from puddles. Puppies can get quite poorly with it but it is a very common infection in dogs of all ages, especially rife if it has been raining a lot.
Poo sample to confirm, then antibiotics and live yoghurt.

Edited

Definitely not giardia with this amount of blood and without any previous symptoms.

I'm afraid I don't have any idea what it could be, but it does sound similar to Parvo (my dog has caught it even though he has been vaccinated).

Sending you a hug OP, and please update when you find out more.
