Dog scratching a lot but no fleas?

She's never been one for scratching a lot.
Had her to the vets who have examined her and found no symptoms, checked her joints, had me walk her around the car park-nothing making her scratch. No fleas-and she's 8 and has never had fleas, I've been advised that fleas don't tend to favour the type of fur that she has.

I am tempted to treat her for them anyway just in case but this probably isn't the best idea. I've also thought about it possibly being hayfever or an allergy?

A lot of human meds are used in dogs off licence. When my previous dog had spinal cancer she was on a whole pharmacy of human drugs. Cost me a fortune. I am medically exempt for prescriptions for myself so it was a shock paying full price.

Ours is the same. I think it is a seasonal / allergy type thing. he is on anti-histamines. he is also constantly licking his paws. We lost our other dog a couple of months ago and I think he is still grieving for her but he also had similar last summer.

Steer clear of Apoquel if the vet offers it. (Or do lots of research first).

Our lab is always itching, but I firmly believe now is anxiety related. But we cannot get her off apoquel now, and what I've read about it I'd rather she wasn't on it at all.

@Afternoonteavirgin I have a Lab, three and a half years old. He has allergies. I've been working through diet, but the vet suggests Piriton. He's 25kg, and the vet said 4mg twice a day is acceptable. Apparently, he's grown into it which is not unusual.

NB - I am not recommending anything, merely passing on my own experience 😉
