Dog in season/heat - still bleeding after 17days. Normal?

As the title suggests, golden retriever in first heat/season still bleeding after 17days. Everything I've read suggests it's much shorter than this, is this normal?

She seems fine in herself, a bit quieter perhaps, keeping herself clean. I always thought/ have read that the bleeding phase was much shorter ? She is 7months

My mini labradoodle had her first season and bled for 28 days. I checked in with the vet by phone a few times and as she was eating and drinking as usual they were happy to let her be. My vet told me it's quite normal for 1st season.

ahwhattodo · 19/06/2024 22:29

Oh really, ok that's reassuring thanks for the reply, I will give the vet a call perhaps in the next few days if it doesn't seem to be easing off just to check for her.

Mine bleed for three weeks. Keep completely away from off lead males. Raspberry leaf helps them feel more like themselves. And watch for pyometra.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/06/2024 22:38

Pyometra (womb infection) is extremely unlikely in a dog as young as that.

Thank you for the replies, yes she's been kept away from all dogs , and will be spayed as soon as the vet will allow! ( we had to let her have one season apparently, although I know some let them have the op before any seasons appear)

Unlikely but still possible in any unspayed bitch. It’s something that scares me! Mine aren’t spayed for specific breed related health concerns. Would be so much simpler if they were spayed.

Wolfiefan · 19/06/2024 22:49

X post. Definitely better not to spay too young. Bigger dogs especially need to mature before spaying. They need their hormones. (I’m thinking my next pup may be a male. 🥴)

ahwhattodo · 19/06/2024 22:49

I will have a google and keep an eye on that (I hadn't heard of pyometra), thank you

We have always had males! Had a girl this time as our DD was desperate for a girl, beginning to miss my boys!! 😂

I’d heard of it but it can be both closed and open. My older girl is in season and the raspberry leaf supplement has really helped. You’re much more likely for her to have a phantom than a pyo I would guess.

Our golden bleeds for 3 weeks and stays swollen for an about 3 weeks after bleeding stops, this is their most fertile time so be aware.

Wolfiefan · 19/06/2024 22:52

I am soooooo puppy broody. Actually turned down a girl pup (who crawled into my arms and licked my chin😩) as we have holidays booked etc.
Still not sure whether to go boy next time. 🤦‍♀️

kwetu · 19/06/2024 22:53

Should also add she he'd her first season at 7months old, and has had regular seasons every 7 months since.

Thank you for the advice, I'd imagine this is when most people get caught out then! She will be staying firmly attached to us! I've read so much but it's great to talk to people who have been there and are experiencing it! Thanks again

Oh no! They have a way at pulling at your heart don't they? Our old boy dog was amazing 😢 such a big old softy, was scared of next doors cat 🙄😂.

@kwetu thanks, really hoping she doesn't have another one!

My girl was a good 4 weeks, and then she struggled with anxiety and being generally not herself for many weeks after that unfortunately. Raspberry leaf tea tablets did seem to help her settle

Wolfiefan · 20/06/2024 07:02

We have two terrible torties they are very much in charge!

ahwhattodo · 25/06/2024 10:26

An update incase anyone reads this in the future.

Been to the vets, thorough examination, vet happy and said although unusual for bleeding to last this long it's not unheard of, vet said she may just be "stuck" in this phase with it being her first. Going to give her another couple of weeks and if it's still there she will get an injection to bring on ovulation to stop the bleeding.

Also discussed and will be booking in spaying 3 months after this season finishes!
