Sudden shedding!

My dog turned 5 last week and suddenly he’s shedding enough hair every day to fashion a whole new pack of dogs 🤯 no change in diet or environment, and no bald spots or itching but my god, it’s everywhere!

Is it the weather?! His age?! He used to shed a tiny bit but now there are clouds of hair when he jumps off the sofa 😂 he’s short-coated and luckily enjoys being brushed but I don’t know where it’s coming from and when it’s going to stop, I worry he’ll be bald by July!

The birds are getting all the hair for their nests, so at least someone will be pleased!

Does he have an undercoat? My dog is fairly short haired, but April/May had a marathon shed of all of her undercoat (and since then has barely dropped a hair—bliss!). Her brother, who has the same coat (but lives elsewhere) has not shed his. Apparently the natural shed cycle can be disrupted in dogs because they live indoors. It might be that this year your dog is for whatever reason having their natural shed.

Possibly! The hair he is losing is cream-coloured but he is ginger to look at, so most likely an undercoat?!

Sounds like it, my girl is brown but the hair she shed was her cream coloured undercoat. He should be much cooler for summer :)
