had the worst evening - we are going away tomorrow for a week (dogs coming & staying with us as usual) and I had packed Ddogs medication for the week in a plastic pill container with 14 compartments for morn and evening each day, and packed it in a zippy pouch bag. Then put pouch bag in with dog food tins and other stuff in a big travel bag and left by front door for DH to pour in car with other stuff later on. Went out with toddler to do some errands. Get call from DH during errands to say he is on way to vet at high speed as Ddog has chewed into bags and managed to open the pill box and eaten SEVEN DAYS worth of medicine. Dog has been kept over nights at vets to see if he will pull through.
i am devastated- my fault for leaving luggage on floor. Dog has never done this before. I feel truly awful and just so so worried. Have managed to rebook departure tomorrow so we could go in the evening. Vet said that he will either pull through and be ok, and should be fine to go as planned or he won’t. We have to call at 9am tomorrow morning to see how he has been.

i obviously cannot sleep with the worry.
the reason for going away is to attend my grandmothers funeral on Monday.. awful already but even more awful now.
His medicine is serious stuff. A barbiturate for probable epilepsy and medication for low grade heart disease. He’s 15 so no spring chicken. A rescue..been with us since he was 11. my heart is broken and I am so so worried for him 😭🙏

Anyone 😭 I’m tempted to go and sit outside the vets, maybe he’d know I was there.

Oh I really feel for you 😞
Please don't be hard on yourself, these things happen and you obviously love your dog very much. I hope they pull through and this will all blow over. Take care and try to take things one step at a time.
If you can be there for your dog without going away I sure that would be a bit comfort for them.

babyproblems · 01/06/2024 00:30

@northchesterforest thankyou ❤️ I will be there with him as ‘going away’ means returning to family for a week - I can’t really avoid the trip as its my grandmas funeral. Will be staying at parents’ house which dog knows well and travelling in car so if it goes ahead I will always with Ddog during trip. Bar the hour of actual funeral service. Vet said that tonight will be the crucial time - they will support his body through it and hope he survives basically. If he does he will feel rough tomorrow but will recover as it moves through his system, but the main risk is tonight and his survival through it being absorbed by his body. They gave him a vomit inducting injection as soon as he arrived at vets but he wasn’t sick as some of his medication is anti sickness to help ease his cough which can be chronic due to his heart function not being great. So as he wasn’t sick it had to be option B which is basically trying to flush out as much as possible and support him through it. I know he’ll be so scared aswell. So sad this has happened 😔

Sending get well thoughts for Ddog and a handhold for you. Don't beat yourself up. Bereavement does weird things to your head and you don't realise it at the time.

XelaM · 01/06/2024 00:59

Hope your dog is ok OP xx

babyproblems · 01/06/2024 01:07

Thankyou for replying ❤️ I’m still awake thinking of him there. Just cannot switch off tonight. still 7 hours until they open in the morning. I would think the crucial time will be coming to an end now as this all began about 4pm and he was really starting to be poorly about 6pm when he was at the vet so hopefully now he is either improving as it all moves along or he is already not suffering anymore.x

Let us all know in the morning what happens. I really do feel for you, my boy is everything to me and I'd be devastated. Sending you love and hugs xxxx

CanIbeRio · 01/06/2024 01:15

Oh OP I have everything crossed for yiu and ddog 🙏🤞. Be kind to yourself. You clearly love your dog and would never intentionally put him in harms way. Hoping for goid news tomorrow

EnidH00pes · 01/06/2024 01:19

Oh OP sending lots of love to you and your boy! We've had this recently- I left the dogs meds out on the side in the utility (gated off from him) and DW left the gate open when doing the bins. He had snaffled a whole blister pack of medication, the cats breakfast and the contents of the food bin (Bleurgh) by the time she got back.

He was a bit wobbly and dozy for a night in the vets but plenty of fluids and he's been ok since (apart from getting up in the night but think that's dementia- he's nearly 13)

Please keep us updated!

fieldsofbutterflies · 01/06/2024 07:33

I hope you get some good news - but please don't blame yourself. These things happen Flowers

Thatwouldbeme · 01/06/2024 07:48

I'm really hoping you have some good news this morning x

Just1234 · 01/06/2024 07:50

I hope you get some good news this morning OP

A friend recently had her spaniel get into 50 doses of daily medication. The vets made him sick and kept him for a few days expecting the worse but he pulled through and is right as rain so crossing my fingers for you

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/06/2024 08:10

Oh my heart goes out to you.

We’ve had 2 emergency dash to vets one for a raisin and another for eating Camembert (pancreatitis) so not the same but still so worrying.

Deep condolences for your grandmother 💐💐

babyproblems · 01/06/2024 08:50

Update - he is ok!!!!! I am SO SO relieved. Just off the phone with the vets. My Legs are like jelly. He is walking a bit wobbly but they said he seems ok and to watch him closely but he should be ok. Can collect him later this morning and can go on trip for funeral later today. Thanks so much for your replies it’s been such a comfort. I think I am more relieved than I was after Labour!!!!

That’s great news, OP!

Try not to be too hard on yourself - these things happen. And now it’s happened it won’t again!

FastFood · 01/06/2024 08:56

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 01/06/2024 08:59

BotDranning · 01/06/2024 09:42

So happy for you- they are buggers aren't they?

Floralnomad · 01/06/2024 13:52

Excellent news

Newpeep · 01/06/2024 18:37

Little sod. My elderly dog had never touched anything before and one day when we went out ate three nets of chocolate coins. With wrapping! Thankfully vet was open and advised a wait and see and she was fine. Pooed small bits of foil for days!

These things happen.

northchesterforest · 01/06/2024 21:44

So happy to hear that OP, I'm sure it was a terrible fright for you. Take care and all the best for the funeral.
