Chihuahua neutered yesterday and she's so lethargic

She was out of it yesterday, she has eaten. She's peed and pooped several times. She's drank water and she's had little walks from the couch to the garden to use the toilet.

But apart from that she's just staying in her bed (it's on the couch with me) and she's either sleeping or just staring into space.

Is she probably still a bit high?

I know she is OK as she's not crying (a few little whimpers) and she's eating and drinking.

But she's just so small. I worry for her.

Probably a mix of the anaesthetic still in her system and the stress of the procedure. If she doesn't seem in pain and is eating drinking and walking round a bit then she's most likely ok but could you ring the vets for their opinion?

She'll be okay - Chis are made of strong stuff! The lethargy can last 24-48 hours when dogs are neutered - it's a big op. If she's still eating and drinking and happily going outside to toilet then try not to worry too much - although I know it's easier said than done.

As PP said, you can always ring the vets if you're very worried!

I wouldn't say I'm worried as I don't think there's anything wrong, I just can't remember my other dogs being this static afterwards.

She's usually a little bullet, running from room to room.

She didn't even get up when the door knocked.

She alert and responsive just really sleepy.

I suppose she's just knackered.

Have a look at her gums to make sure they're nice and pink. If they're pale, get her back to the vet ASAP as this can indicate post-operative bleeding (although I doubt she'd be weeing much if this were the case).

MeepMep · 22/05/2024 13:28

They're nice and pink, 👌Thankyou, she's got up and had a little stretch but got straight back in bed. I think she's just super tired.

How's your little dog today @MeepMep ?
My girl had an op at the start of May and she was so lethargic for three days and then suddenly perked up.

She's so much better today.
Back on her feet and moving about, begging for treats and fully awake again.
She had a check up and all is good.

I'm tired though as she's been sleeping with me and it's like having a baby in the room again, every time she stirs I wake up 😂

Thankyou for asking :)

You'd be a bit groggy the day after a hysterectomy!

OCaledonia · 23/05/2024 21:00

Oh I slept downstairs with mine (she won't sleep upstairs 🤔)and yup I compared it to a baby with disturbed sleep. We'd do anything for our faithful companions 💕
I'm glad your dog is doing better.
