Dog prostate problems

Anyone's dog had prostate issues? My 10yo border collie first started spotting blood 2 months ago. Had scans, blood tests etc and found an enlarged prostate. He had a 7 day course of tablets to try to shrink it, antibiotics with anti inflammatory but repeat scan showed very little if any change.

Bleeding now much worse and in every wee which is terrifying. Just awaiting CRAF urine results to check for cancer cells. No real other symptoms. He's unneutered so high chance of bph but the amount of blood is alarming.

Looked at old posts but they're from years ago. Hoping someone can relate to this and provide some reassurance.

I’ve had 2 dogs with prostate issues and neutering both of them resolved it immediately.

I hope he’s ok.

@Mangoetonmess thank you so much for your quick reply and well wishes. I'm terrified. Lost my older dog two months today and I'm a mess at the thought of going through it again so soon. He's had the hormone implant today but could take 6-8 weeks to take effect.

Will neuter if urine test comes back clear. Did your dogs have any blood in their wee?

Oh no, I’m so sorry about your other dog, it’s so hard.

Yes, both dogs had blood in urine and they would drip blood constantly. My first dog that had it was about 11, we got him neutered and he was absolutely fine after that.

Current dog had issues early, about 4yrs old. The hormone implant resolved it pretty quickly, then 6 months later he was neutered.

Hopefully he will be fine and it will be sorted quickly.

My first dog had an enlarged prostate as he got older and peed blood. Solved by neutering. But if it is cancer I don't know.

Fortunately, the BRAF urine test returned with no evidence of cancer - what a relief! He's now had the implant in a week today but still blood in urine and dropping spots of blood.
Hoping for some improvement soon. He's having a rescan soon to see if prostate has shrunk at all.
Vet said implant can take 6-8 weeks to be effective. Do you remember how long it took for your dog to show signs of improvement @Mangoetonmess?

Hi,

Extremely worried here, my dog is a 1 year old pomchi and over the last few days hes had a small bit of blood in his stool. Been to vets with him today and on examination they’ve diagnosed a slightly enlarged prostate. He is unneutered and they suggested having him neutered to help this.
i thought he’d be too young to be having prostate issues .

can any one provide any reassurance as I’m now very scared.
Thanks

@Hw82 sorry to hear about your poor dog. From what I've heard, prostate cancer is very rare in such a young dog and much more likely to be hormone related if not neutered. Unfortunately my boy was found to have prostate cancer in the end, despite not being neutered and we lost him in Jan, 6 months after diagnosis but he was 10, 11 when we lost him. Was such a shock and an awful time. I think the odds of your dog having something curable are much better. There are medicines to treat hormonal engagement if you don't want to neuter. I wish you all the best. X

HelenBW1982 Thankyou for your reply. Aww so sorry about your sweet baby. I think we are going for the chemical casteration route to see if this helps with his prostrate and wot he’d potentially be like if he was surgically neutered and take it from there. I hope this gets resolved for him.x
