Help with window barking!!

Please someone please tell me you've successfully been able to stop your dog barking at passers by?

We have a balcony and I want to let her enjoy it out there but she does not stop barking at people passing by. She is a really friendly playful dog but as soon as she's at a window she just barks as soon as she sees someone so I have to bring her in so I don't disturb the neighbours. Gonna be a long summer if I don't sort it.

Any tips/tricks? 🐾 🙏🏻

Sorry @Colalola just blatantly placemarking here.

The first strategy is to prevent the behaviour happening; so you need to either not let her outside on her own or put some coverings on your balcony rails so that she can enjoy the outside but not see the passers by.

Secondly you need to do some clicker training. So you sit outside with her on the balcony, use the clicker as soon as someone comes into her sight and immediately reward with a treat. You need to get the timing of this correct, but there is loads of advice online explaining (more eloquently and expertly than I can) how to do this type of training.

How old is she? My terrier used to be a terrible barker at squirrels in the garden but, now he's 3, the barking is significantly reduced. I wish I could say this is all down to my training and prevention, but I think it is probably due in large part to his maturing.

Everything I read said that dogs find barking incredibly rewarding behaviour so you definitely need to intervene now to break the habit.

Good luck!

Watching with interest and was actually googling YouTube for tips yesterday.

  1. Stop access to the window completely. The more she barks the more she will
  2. Counter condition - click (or mark with a word) and treat any time she notices but doesn't react
My dog grew out of this as it's a common adolescent behaviour but only because we stopped her practicing it in the first place.

We put a folding screen against our front bay window as the net curtains weren't enough, now she mainly only barks when a heavy-stomper goes past or someone slams a car door right outside our house.
