Stinky - is it down to the breed?

Currently have a lab and border terrier. Both intact males

Lab smells lovely. I liken it to digestive biscuits. No stinky breath. Can bury my head in his fur and be in heaven.

BT stinks. Breath and fur. Totally cute so kind of forgive him 😂 Regular check ups at vet and no oral/other health problems. He’s only 2. It’s not anal glands.

Both have raw bones for oral health. Admit I’m a bit shit on regular teeth brushing. (Few times a month). both have raw diet.

Is it the difference in coat - short vs wire?
Is stinky breath related to length of snout/size of mouth?
Is it terriers? Every terrier I’ve ever known stinks! Although I’ve owned newfies too and they stink (is it the coat?)

Is it a breed thing? Is there any hope for my stinky yet very cute and loveable BT?

I have a tiny terrier and she smells divine.

In fact I would describe her smell as biscuity.

I've previously had terriers of different breeds and they smelled fine too.

So I'm here to say that there's no inherent olfactory issue with the magnificent breed that is terrier.

So there.

LightDrizzle · 06/04/2024 21:50

My bulldog honked. No skin problems and always looked great.
My Dalmatian only had a smell when wet.
My mastiff was somewhere between the two.

I want to smell your terrier!! (Is that weird?!) 😂 I wish they could bottle that biscuity smell!

we have some support in the terrier camp!

Interesting. All short haired breeds. And varying degrees of stinkiness!

Cats smell amazing! 😃

PointerSister · 06/04/2024 22:02

I have had a lab, fox terrier and now a wire haired pointer. The pointer is the least stinky. Lab was the worst. Current dog not stinky at all and has the “biscuity” smell. Haven’t done anything different with any of them. In fact probably wash the current woofer the least. The feet is the best bit - total biscuityness ♥️

I wish we could share the smell factor.

You mentioned biscuits in your OP and that's exactly how I smell her. Biscuity.

EffinMagicFairy · 06/04/2024 22:07

My border has the digestive biscuit smell, good job she’s otherwise perfect, just had her teeth cleaned so a sparkling set of pearly whites.

ComfyBoobs · 06/04/2024 22:08

Our border has the digestive biscuit smell. It’s really warm and comforting, not nasty at all.

Tanfastic · 06/04/2024 22:09

My BT only gets bathed every few months so although he has a distinct smell about himself I don't find it particularly offensive. His breath however honks, it's not his anal glands, I've checked. He's nearly 3.

My previous dog was much much smellier (different breed) so it's nice to have a less stinky dog!

Tanfastic · 06/04/2024 22:09

Yes it's the biscuity smell! I like it 🙈

iamwhatiam23 · 06/04/2024 22:11

My two English Bulldogs ( m&f) both stink but my frenchie doesn't 🤷‍♀️

MissBridgetJones · 06/04/2024 22:15

Gently snoring 4 month old lab on my lap (total space invader) and he deffo smells of digestive biscuits. I wanna lay my head on his little tummy and breathe him in!

*i need to lay off the broccoli 🥦 tidbits as his bottom end isn't so nasally pleasing!

mintbiscuit · 06/04/2024 22:22

@ComfyBoobs @EffinMagicFairy did you luck out on the BT lottery??!

I've got 2 spaniels and they both stink. Usually of stagnant pond.

They usually get a buzz cut in summer so it's easier to wash them Grin

fieldsofbutterflies · 06/04/2024 23:18

My beagle smells of cheesy biscuits Grin

Fizzadora · 06/04/2024 23:20

No it's because it's a dog. All dogs stink, no matter what their owners think.

Maneandfeathers · 07/04/2024 07:11

I work with dogs. Some breeds are notorious for stink.

I find the worst smelling are dogs like bulldogs, chows, pugs, sharpei. They leave a smell on your hands. Westies generally smell awful.

I don’t find labs etc that bad but it tends to be those with allergies that smell.

Mine smell damp but that’s a maintenance issue because of the great British weather and ponds 😄

Paperdolly · 07/04/2024 07:34

My sprocker doesn’t smell of anything. I have some dog spray that smells of baby powder and sometimes give her a quick squirt if guests are coming.

WoodBurningStov · 07/04/2024 07:38

My BT's ears smell of biscuits and her feet kind of cheesy Grin

It's probably down to coat, do you have your BT hand stripped in a regular basis? Ours gets down about every 3/4 months and she doesn't smell.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 07/04/2024 07:45

I've just freaked my terrier out by sniffing him to see if he smells like biscuits (he doesn't). He was fast asleep on my lap but now he has stalked off. Good, really, because I can now stand up and make another coffee.

He isn't stinky. He has a wire coat which is lovely to maintain through brushing and plucking. No bad breath.

I want the biscuit smell, though. Might rub him with digestives.

You're right! Cats never smell like dogs do. Very interesting. FWIW the dogs I've had with skin/ear issues and allergies have all stunk, and the longer haired ones all stink over shorter haired breeds. Teeth of a flat faced breed were horrendous (and very expensive to maintain). Longer snouted breeds have far healthier mouths IME.

muddyford · 07/04/2024 08:03

My Labs have always had coats that smell lovely.Spaniel is fine flight his breath can be rank. Cats just stink. Houses where cats live make my eyes water. I dare say my house smells doggy though.
