To be really unsure about how to handle our old dog's habits and maintain our home ..

Our dog is 15 . The vet says she is blind and deaf and has some signs of dementia possibly- but it is haed to tell because she can be lost in the house due to sight nit confusion .
the vet says that she believes dogs with lack if sight etc can still have a good quality of life as they can enjoy being near loved ones , feel the warmth of the sun . She for sure enjoyed sleeping next to me on her back next ro me this afternoon .

for some months now she mostly sleeps in the day - has a lively teatime period . She wees a lot in the night now so she can no lomger sleep with us - she sleeps in the hall which means s lined worh puppy pads as she cannot last all night now and we also suspect by the amount of pad use she is active at night .
She mostky goes out in the garden or short walks . We actively toilet her take hee into yeh garden many times a day .

The problem is she has started wee in the house ( for some weeks now - this can be f5 mins after she has been out !
we dont know if its linked to sight.
she does not have any urine problems - the vet has checked .

Despite our efforts - the kitchen dinner smells of wee. People say they cant smell it but you can .
my friend said she couldnt. Stand this as it would make her feel dirty. She wd pts .

my dh said yesterday he had enough.
I siad but she is a happy old dog .
she enjous her food , she likes to me with me . She dozes. But our rugs are ruined ( wool ) and our kitchen feels awful despite cleaning .
its getting dh down .
I feel bu whatever I do .

Ah, that's sad for you but the decision was overtaken by events. Your dog had a nice life with you and it was time after all.

Mayhemmumma · 03/04/2024 16:14

Awww the decision was made for you and at a time that was right. She had a good ending.

Dearg · 03/04/2024 16:18

So sorry for your loss. Thank you for taking the time to update .

Your wee girl was clearly dearly loved, and will have known that to the end.

But when I am old and incontinant i may still be happy so - genuine question- why cant she be ?
my honest fear is that it would be pts so that we are not inconvenienced- that is my absolute fear Essentially as the vet said to me bllind dogs can have good quality of life when I asked her .

This basically. If shes happy and without pain its awful to pts just because shes inconvenient. My dog was similar. He was so confused. Would stand at the door to the garden, i let him out, then he forgets he wanted to pee and came back inside. All of a sudden he remembered he needed to pee and stood st the door again. He would do this over and over if i didnt intervene until he leaked. Luckily he knew the command to pee, this helped a bit.

I think this is one of those times you should really read the whole thread before posting.

OP I am really so sorry and hope you are coping okay today.

@Fairymother

you have missed the update. Sadly she has been PTS today due to a further illness.

Amelie2024 · 03/04/2024 16:35

@Nameisnewforthis

obviously I'm sorry she's gone, it's heartbreaking.

Sometimes we just need that extra something to convince us that it's the right thing to do.

Fairymother · 03/04/2024 16:36

Oh no im sorry 😔 this is very sad.

flippyflappy · 05/04/2024 14:00

I'm sorry. I know how you're feeling as we had our 15.5 year old doggo put to sleep on Wednesday evening. It was very peaceful and she basically fell asleep on the sofa with us all there. Hope you're doing ok. Flowers

LilFoxes · 05/04/2024 14:30

Huge sympathies OP, this is a horrid decision. 15 is definitely an old dog, you sound like you have made huge adjustments to your life to accommodate her aging and have given her a really good last bit.
Agree with what's been said, very few dogs are happy peeing where they sleep. When we realised our old girl had had her time, she'd was increasingly incontinent, gone totally doolally and was struggling to get on and off her favourite sofa. She was still eating and sleeping and even had zoomies on her last walk but I firmly believe 5 minutes too early is better than 5 minutes too late.
The vet was incredibly kind and said he found it refreshing to see owners who had had made the decision before the dog was barely being held together by medication.
There comes a point where you have to acknowledge you are keeping her going for yourself, not her. Hardest bit of owning a dog and I hope you reach a decision you find peace with.

LilFoxes · 05/04/2024 14:33

Didn't read the latest update - so sorry for your loss OP, truly sounds like she had the best last bit and you can feel good about giving her that.

princessbeetroot · 05/04/2024 15:02

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. I'm not a dog person but have cats and my old boy was PTS last year aged 15 after a similar journey. It's so hard to say goodbye but she is at peace now and it sounds like you did all the right things.

From a purely practical point of view now, the enzyme cleaners are good and do seem to help, although we got a new kitten months after the old boy passed and she could clearly still smell where he weed even after lots of cleaning (he had a particular spot), but at least we couldn't smell it.
