Dog training instagrammers

We’re in the early stages of looking for a dog. Hoping to get one next spring/summer. Have had a puppy before but it’s been a good few years!

Would love some recommendations on good instagrammers to follow for dog training advice. There’s so much crap out there and sometimes it’s not obvious at first, so thought I’d start with recommendations…

Not sure if she is on Instagram, but Kikopup on YouTube is very good.
I'd suggest looking at the ADPT & IMDT websites for trainers too.

I find Susan Garret Dog's That so good, loads of really practical advice and it's positive reinforcement based but very clever. She has several online programmes that you have to pay for but also free content on her Instagram, YouTube and a podcast (Shaped by Dog)

What type of dog are you getting and what type of training are you looking for?
basic obedience?
gundog?
games?

Probably a Havanese or Miniature Schnauzer, possibly a terrier (Welsh, Cairn).

Basic obedience. But more behavioural stuff I guess, I have an idea of what I’m doing with sit, stay, etc, but feel like I need more on things like general calmness, not reacting to other dogs, not barking hysterically at the postie, etc.

Will Atherton (YouTube) for loose lead walking - which every dog should be able to do.
McCann Dogs (think YouTube and instagram) for everything else. Including first nights, toilet training, socialisation etc.

Don’t use Dog Daddy. Teenagers seem to think he’s gods gift. He’s not - he’s a twat.

Louise glazebrook is good

(Im not a fan of Will Atherton with hs stupid slip lead 'pops'/ yanks)

OldSpeclkledHen · 25/03/2024 07:33

I really like Will Atherton on YouTube

I’d try and find a local trainer too so you can get out to classes if that’s what you want to work on

someone that does structured group training would be very useful for your dog learning to be around others

instagram is good but doesn’t always show the true picture of how a dogs been training imo

Dogs Trust Dog School have their own Instagram, but it's mainly cute pics from their classes, there are some good info videos on there too though

Worth being careful in terms of some of these people...we have a Havanese and they have small necks so can get collapsed trachea if leads are used on their necks rather than using a lead on a harness. A lot of the people I have seen on Instagram / you tube tend to focus on pulling a dog by their lead on their collar to 'encourage' obedience. It's dangerous for small dogs, and I would also say some of what they focus on is about getting their dog to be as obedient as possible (in the way you would need a working dog to be), whereas we want a family pet, which frankly are different needs.

I don't know if they're on Instagram, but I'd highly recommend the following:

KikoPup
Will Atherton
Kamal Fernandez
