My 12 year old Yorkie has suffered with quite severe heart failure since July last year. Up until now we've been able to control it with a variety of meds but it seems now it's progressed to a point that her body is no longer able to accept the diuretics.

We were up since 4am with her breathing very heavily and a lot of coughing. She's now at the vets having one last attempt at a different medication but it doesn't look good. The vet spoke to us about euthanasia and to be honest I can't even get through a few minutes without crying. She is still interested in her food, cuddles etc but her breathing rate has progressed to a point where life just wouldn't be comfortable for her.

How am I supposed to say goodbye to my best friend? My heart is breaking already.

I make peace with the decision. It is either the only outcome, or the best outcome, if it wasn't either of those you wouldn't be in the position you find yourself.

Hug her, tell her you love her and let her have a peaceful ending 😢

I'm so sorry OP, it's the hardest decision in the world. But it's the right one Flowers

Thank you both. We made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to my little girl last night. I've never felt grief quite like this before as she was my shadow. I will miss her forever.

I am so sorry 💐

12 years of a life filled with love, and then allowed to gently slip away with her best friend by her side. Your beautiful girl was so very lucky.

The grief you're feeling now is the sad price we pay for loving so hard. Just take it minute by minute and grieve however you need to, just know you did the right thing for your precious girl ❤️

I am so sorry Op. I am watching my boy, who captured the whole of my heart, accelerate into old age, and i know the day is coming.

Your lovely girl knew you loved her, that’s why she was your wee shadow. You did the very best for her 💐

I’m so very sorry.
I lost my elderly little Yorkie in November so know how you must be feeling, she was my shadow always. She too had heart trouble but had been on meds for several years, plus some arthritis. In the end though she had a small stroke which she recovered from but her life had just become a burden to her. It was very, very hard for me to admit that but even I could finally see that. It’s hard, there no getting away from it, never, ever easy. I just try to think of it as taking her suffering onto myself, my grief for her pain.
I have other dogs but it doesn’t make it easier, especially when they were that special, so special little shadow. You will , eventually, remember the better times with her, honest. Meantime take care 💐

MuttsNutts · 19/03/2024 18:35

Oh bless you, I am so very sorry.

What a lucky girl to have been loved so much and that you were able to make the hardest decision when she needed you to.

💐
