Tips on collecting urine sample from small female dog, please

Vets and YouTube suggest a collecting vessel that is narrow enough to slide between her back legs, short enough not to touch her when I slide it under, and long enough to collect something given that I can't see when it's in the right place,. Given how low she squats, and she's less than 10kg anyway, finding something suitable is a bit of a challenge.

I appreciate that vets can get samples in other ways, but regular urine tests are likely to be part of her future so we need a solution I can manage at home.

All ideas welcome, thank you from both of us!

Hold a twig so he thinks you're a tree

Cut a 2 pinter milk carton into a shovel

That's what we do

You need cut the top half of the lower end of the bottle

Cut the takeaway container down smaller to about a cm. Any sharp edges cover with a bit of tape. I did this for my jack Russell who was diabetic to test her urine. Other tip is to make sure you get the first wee of the day - there is usually more of it and they really need to go so less likely to stop mid wee

Ps

Don't forget to keep the screw top on!

I use a plastic tray that things like meat comes from in the supermarket. Just wash it out well, big advantage is you can just throw it away afterwards. Oh & be sure not to use one that has fruit like raspberries in as they have holes in the bottom 😁. They make brilliant seed trays though.

Clean lid of a butter tub or carte for ice-cream tub.... I have experience 🙄😂😅

Melsy88 · 24/02/2024 20:14

A ladle spoon! It was the only thing that worked for me as had a long handle so I could keep a bit of distance. With tupperware she would feel it and refuse to pee until I'd left her alone 😂
OBVIOUSLY throw away and replace it afterwards!
Good luck 😅

Silicone muffin case.

Don't then make muffins...

The flat lid from a chippie take away tub.

Happy to report success! I used the bottom half of a plastic soap dish and she didn't even notice. Thanks for helping me thing more creatively and giving me a smile at the same time.😁

Nice one OP. For future reference I used a tiny one egg frying pan (from the aisles of doom at Aldi). As it's got a handle its easy to slip under.
