I have teen aged kids, dog friendly cats, mostly work from home, rural woodland walks to hand and a tendency to walk 6 or 7 miles daily off road. No allergies.

Cocker spaniel, working type because the show ones can be stubborn.
WCS are lively, spirited, happy, smart, and a joy to be around.

Agreed

I also don't understand why they aren't more popular, they're beautiful dogs and all the ones I've met have been really quite chilled - although have heard recall is a bit of a problem!

You've answered your own question!

Flatcoated Retrievers! Truly addictive dogs, we are on our third and I can't imagine any other breed in my life! Goofy, loving, smart and friendly. I call them the stealer of hearts because you just love them beyond all reason!

Gorgeous 😍 My first dog was a flat coat and he was wonderful. We considered the breed when we got ours but were put off by their short lifespan :( mine died of liver cancer when he was only 9 and that seems common.
