I went to visit my future dog today. He was born may last year, and will come home sometime this summer.

he is bloody gorgeous, and just so scrumptious. I’ve never had a Labrador, but I think I’m converted 😂 he’s a working line lab.

isn’t he just beautiful.

He’s a lovely boy!

why do you have to wait so long for him?

He is being partially trained. So when he is ready he will come. But I get to meet him frequently.

Honestly I don’t know either. I first enquired September. Went to visit mid October, then mid November, finalised it shortly after that. And he was chosen a few weeks ago so finally got to meet him. I am so in love.

I think I’m tolerating it at the moment as because I know I can’t cope with a puppy and I have to save up money, so that’ll take me a few months. He’s quite expensive lol. But he’ll be worth it.

He’s so gorgeous. We have a working Labrador who was born last May too, same colouring as your boy. Fabulous dogs.

Will he be a working gundog?

No, one or maybe more of his brothers will be, but not mine. He will hopefully be an assistance dog, he was chosen for his temperament. He’s calm and confident but not cocky like his brothers, is how his trainer described him 😂

Oh wow thats amazing, you'll have to let us know how you get on. I get very invested in these kind of stories to do with dogs 😆

Aww a fox red lab! Wonderful dogs, so smart, eager to please and loving 🧡

Okay I'm slightly biased, I have one called Honey who has just turned 1 and is the absolute apple of my eye!

Oh she is beautiful.

i was always not keen on labs, as the only ones I’d met or seen were fat, decrepit and exuberant to say the least. But I thought give it a go. As soon as I went to visit the first time, we were there 45 minutes and met my guys full sister from another litter(she was being trained as a gundog) and my guys mum, I was converted. And meeting mine I was like yes this is definitely the one for me. I’d always preferred goldens, but labs have won me over.

He's gorgeous!!! I adopted my black lab/something fast and leggy just before Christmas and she's brought so much to my life. Just having to take her out for a walk three times a day is lifting my mood so much and when she comes on my lap for a cuddle its just heaven!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/01/2024 09:31

Oh look at him!

redboxer321 · 11/01/2024 11:11

Why is he being partially trained? That would ring bells for me.

candlelog · 11/01/2024 11:38

He's gorgeous. The way he's sitting and looking attentively is so cute.

Because I want him to be. He’s hopefully gonna be an assistance dog and I can’t cope with little puppies. It’s very common in gundog circles (which he is a breed of) to do partially and fully trained dogs. Most partially trained go for pets. But the place I’m getting mine from does for different purposes. It’s expensive but worth it.

Well, he’s definitely gorgeous! I have to confess I’m always a bit sceptical about the services that offer training away from home. I can see the attraction for people who don’t want a puppy and/or are not confident with training themselves. I do think that the dog can only be trained to do what the person who is training them wants and when they get handed over it might not be so easy. Especially if being bought by a first time dog owner. Sometimes it’s the people who have to be trained as much as the dog 😁. I’ve had a fair few Labs, amongst other breeds and we all love them, gorgeous creatures. We always rescue so have had a couple of the oldies that have gone a little to the fat side, they only get like that when owned by people who don’t put the time and effort in to good food and exercise though. We always managed to turn ours around and get them back in to good health, which was rewarding in itself. I hope it all goes well, and please would you mind either updating or doing a new thread once you e had him for a bit? I’d be fascinated to know how being part trained works out in practice. X

Yes is shall update as I go.

you can visit every week or two or so. Depending on what suits you and whether you need help to get trained to look after a dog a bit.

so the owner gets trained along side the dog. So you can bond and stuff. And there’s a trial run for night or something to make sure the dog behaves right for you and if there’s any issues and if there is then they will continue to work with you and the dog till it’s right.

and also if the dog turns out not to be suitable as it grows then they’ll say and will find another dog that is right. One of theirs not a random one.

the place is very open and upfront. They have sent dogs all over the world, mainly America, these are usually part trained to either be pets, part working or full working. And they go over with the dog, make sure it settles and they often visit previous dogs that have been taken over.

Oh he's such a cutie pie! I bet you can't wait to bring him home!

LikeagoddamnVampire · 11/01/2024 23:35

He's very handsome and has a kind expression. Some labs are very smart, some are total thick headed goof balls, although still utterly lovable. Looks like you got a smart one!
