What dog myths are you told that are a load of rubbish:

Can not teach an old dog new tricks

Picking up a dog when it is frightened makes it more anxious

My dog peed on the floor to annoy me

Small dog syndrome

My dog looked quilty - he knew he had done wrong

Context is vital.

I would not be hassling a food reactive dog when eating its meal at all.

Unless there is a real need for the dog to have to eat around people and I can not think of any reason why this may need to happen.
Always give the dog peace to eat.

Dog relaxed no need to food guard and the dog becomes comfortable around food.

We dont always need to "fix" things, just making the dog comfortable and relaxed is enough for the dog.

Giving treats can also be done without conflict for the dog.

Who are you doing your Level 6 with?

Compass Education. It was a devil's own job to find a course that didn't need me to be a vet first, and even then there is a load of pre-work to do.

It's very interesting though, and at least the fact that it is interesting is motivating me through. It isn't anywhere near as easy to learn later in life 🤣

Agree about not fixing if it isn't broken. I suspect I should probably have just waited longer with the benefit of hindsight. Actually, that's true in almost all my training scenarios, and I'm finally getting it. Just give it a moment or two longer.

@HappiestSleeping I think it is human nature to want to fix things Smile Enjoy your course - I went down the uni route for my behavior stuff

I think the major difference between behaviourists and trainers is that many behaviourists dont do much training at all! Just look at improving the dogs emotions and mood. Not training a new way of behaving just a new way of feeling.

I did mine with Compass (mine was the old HND, converted to a foundation degree) and really enjoyed it. Mine was very thorough and I had access to some really interesting and knowledgeable people.

I have a BSc already so getting onto it was no problem.

Good luck and I hope you get as much out of it as I did.

Rubbing your puppies nose in its own piss when it's had an accident will house train it
😒😒

@IngGenius thanks for clarifying the raw / kibble can't be fed together myth. I feed solely raw but good to know anyway.

Good news that you had a good experience.

I already have a masters, but management accounts isn't the most directly related subject 🤣

Spaniels are manic and you can never tire them out.

Everyone we meet while out says "Bet she never stops" or similar. Well, she does stop, often. She is really calm at home, and on walks unless she spots a rabbit or something, or another friendly dog comes to play. But the vast majority of the time, she is just snoozing, occupying herself with a toy or snuggling in for a good cuddle.

“Harnesses cause pulling”…..which, if true, suggests sled / canicross dogs would never need training to pull. And all those assistance dogs, they’d be pulling their handlers down the street due to the magic properties of their harness.
