What dog myths are you told that are a load of rubbish:

Can not teach an old dog new tricks

Picking up a dog when it is frightened makes it more anxious

My dog peed on the floor to annoy me

Small dog syndrome

My dog looked quilty - he knew he had done wrong

I'm really interested in this thread as considering (for 5 yrs) another dog. Is the dominance theory pack mentality not true?!!

Totally utterly not true - loads of bollocks, dismissed back in the 70's but people still spout on about it!

PTSDBarbiegirl · 12/12/2023 22:14

Wow, that's a revelation. I thought dogs were pack animals who respond to 'their' person best ie pack leader. I'll have to read up more!!

margotrose · 12/12/2023 22:21

Can golden retrievers be extremely dangerous?!

Absolutely.

A pack of five near to us almost killed two spaniels not so long ago.

Bingandbang · 12/12/2023 22:29

Retired greyhounds can be left for hours and don’t need much exercise

Ive had 3 and this isn’t really true

dogs need off lead time to burn off energy

ive got a beagle and a grey. You really don’t want them off lead ‘burning off energy’

FinallyFinalGirl · 12/12/2023 22:42

@margotrose oh my goodness! Are you ok?

Golden Retrievers are my nightmare. Idiots buy them for stupid money thinking they are these amazing friends in dog form.

They're called Retrievers for a reason, people. They are bred to be predators.

margotrose · 12/12/2023 22:44

@FinallyFinalGirl they weren't my dogs - they belong to a friend but yes, they both made a full recovery thankfully!

margotrose · 12/12/2023 22:45

@Bingandbang totally with you about beagles and being off the lead Grin

Mine can be trusted in about two different locations else he just buggers off!

Thanks Margot and I'm so glad.

I really hate that families are bringing Golden Retrievers into children's lives, by reading silly shit about on this site. These dogs are no angels.

FinallyFinalGirl · 12/12/2023 22:48

*About them.

Sunandnomoon · 12/12/2023 22:50

Dogs/cats are ‘better’ pets ie, ‘I’m a cat person / I’m a dog person’.

When in fact, they’re both just as wonderful with different qualities.

Sidebeforeself · 12/12/2023 22:51

Okay here’s my myth but some of you won’t like it..
”There’s nothing wrong with “new” breeds such as Cockerpoos etc.”

I'm lucky enough to have an enclosed, empty field close by so my Beagle cross gets off-lead time there.

He'll spend about 10 minutes doing zoomies, 20 minutes or so playing with his frisbee and then he takes himself to the edge of the field to sniff the fence/scrubland beyond the fence.

He much prefers sniffing to running.

We have a small wood not too far away. Alone it would take me 10 minutes to walk around the pathways. With the dog, it's an hour-long route but that hour wears him out for three times the time that a run/off-lead walk does.

Golden retriever. As in the beautiful, friendly, long haired dog? That every website seems to say is the most friendly breed?

Sorry I am no trying to be a dick I just am genuinely gobsmacked. I have never seen or heard this before. I have a golden lab and she's the softest animal I've known. Is scared of the cat. etc

Definitely this! We have a working Labrador and she spends most of her time asleep! And in the morning when we go for a walk she often isn’t out of bed yet and I have to call up to her to come downstairs to put her lead on! She’s the most laid back lazy dog we’ve ever had!

We have a working cocker spaniel who loves to cuddle up and snooze. She refuses to leave the house before 10am not even for a wee.

Sholkedabemus · 13/12/2023 03:49

it’s a good thing to cross any breed with a poodle. 🙄

Cross breeds are healthier. 🙄

This is a new one, if both parents are cockapoos, the puppies are pedigree. 😂

Poodles HAVE to have stupid haircuts. 🙄

BoomBoom70 · 13/12/2023 04:15

Dog should wear a coat to go outside. lol

HappiestSleeping · 13/12/2023 05:40

That raw feeding is better. (This might be controversial, but nobody has ever been able to show me any scientific evidence)

bassetsarebest · 13/12/2023 06:45

Hounds are untrainable and can never be off lead

On here: dogs playing is a bad thing (where I am, supervised dogs playing is joyous)

Edited

I’ve always found it’s new owners who convince themselves it’s better. I’ve never been convinced.

Much better to spend that money on good insurance!

Terriers are impossible to train

Mine doesn’t need rewards

He’s stubborn (ARGHHHHHHHH!)

Colllies train themselves

He doesn’t see the point (well no, not if you refuse to motivate him)

You’ve never had a basset!
your welcome to come here and see stubborn

Springcleaninginsummer · 12/12/2023 19:53

He is smiling at me. Really? Are you sure?

Might just be greyhounds but mine has 100pc learnt to smile! It’s quite odd.

Or a greyhound!!

Countrylife2002 · 13/12/2023 06:54

My vet told me to ignore my dog when he was terrified.

Reminds me I must change vets

BoomBoom70 · 13/12/2023 04:15

And another one where the greyhound is the exception!!

margotrose · 13/12/2023 06:56

There's no such thing as stubborn in dogs - it's just that some breeds (mainly terriers and hounds) were bred to work independently and not alongside humans.

So, breeds like Labradors, spaniels and retrievers were bred to cooperate with people and to work alongside them, whereas beagles, bassets and Jack Russell's were all bred to go off by themselves and do their jobs independently - so they're not designed to be motivated by humans in the same way and therefore they'll often only do things if there's a benefit to them (like food), otherwise they don't see the point.
