Hello all. Need some thoughts and advice please about my miniature yorkie. He became very unwell quickly Sunday and yesterday. Struggling to breath, coughing constantly. Vet yesterday arranged an ultrasound today.
Bloke who did it just rang dog's got a collapsed trachea, possible cushing's disease and kidney disease. Has anyone been in a similar situation?
We have codeine and diazapam for him. Also looking to buy a cough suppressant - £200 at the vet.
Any thoughts or similar experiences please?

similar re collapsed trachea situation, sorry can't offer much help but certainly sympathise with your situation..
One thing the vet said was feed with raised bowl, smaller meals , more often. no great big meals.

Plus are administering the cough medicine with a ventilator thing held over dogs snout? what did vet suggest?

rumred · 05/12/2023 18:21

@wavingfuriously thanks for replying and sorry you're I a similar boat.
His breathing is very loud and laboured, so quite far gone I think.
We're hand feeding him bits of chicken dipped in honey. . He hasn't slept since returning from the vet 3 hours ago. It's almost unbearable
What dog have you got and when did the problem start?

We weren't given cough medicine. They advised cough suppressant corvental, £200 if we get it through them(they don't stock it so a wait too) . Am waiting for a prescription on email so I can buy it online

I wish I could tell you good news but our chihuahua had treat and it was horrible and we had to PTS within less than a year of diagnosis as the medication wrecked her little body 😢 so I'm praying for you that it comes back that all clear.

I think the collapsed trachea is a little easier to treat.

Cushings *

rumred · 05/12/2023 18:30

@incywincyspiders that's awful, so sorry. They're so fragile sometimes.
I think we probably don't have very long left, the trachea is collapsed and likely vets won't operate given the cushing's and kidney disease. And they're 100+ miles away. It's just grim at the moment. He is struggling for breath, it's like an ongoing death rattle. Vet said it could take a week for him to breathe normally so I'm trying to be calm

Our beloved Edward died last night, it was torture. Just trying to come to terms with it and struggling.

I'm really sorry to hear that @rumred . So hard for you all.

Frenchfemme · 08/12/2023 14:22

So very sorry to hear that. My sister’s dog was pts a few years ago with the same issues so I do feel for you. Run free brave Edward, you were a Very Good Boy.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/12/2023 14:42

Our big shep/retriever mix had this, we PTS in March as there was nothing could be done for him.
The vet said they could test for cushings but honestly, it would have been pointless as there was nothing that could have been done for his trachea. He was 12 1/2 as well and was terrified of vets so he wouldn't have even made it off the table if they'd sedated him to investigate.

I'm so sorry you're going through it too. We miss our boy but we knew it would have been hard for him struggling to breathe the whole time.

Sorry for your loss @rumred 💐

Abergale · 08/12/2023 14:49

You poor thing op =(

I think vets can sometimes be unhelpful sending very sick animals home it must have been a horrible last night for you.

take comfort in that animals don’t feel fear like we did when they are unwell because they don’t have the concept of death or illness. He would have known you were there and you did the best you could for him. Xxx

wavingfuriously · 08/12/2023 19:41

So sorry 💔@rumred it did sound as if he was suffering a lot though, run free little dog..

rumred · 09/12/2023 09:09

Thank you everyone for the kind words. He was definitely suffering, I'm trying not to keep going over it. I'm unhappy with the vet's for sending him home so ill and struggling to breathe. Not sure if I should say something.
I'm sad for all of us who go through this. It's torturous. Love to @Strokethefurrywall
And thanks again all.

So sorry OP, the vet shouldn't have left him in such a poor state, very unfair on you and on your Edward to rob you from a peaceful farewell.
If it can make you feel 1% better, I think you should raise it.

wavingfuriously · 09/12/2023 13:47

That vet shouldn't have left you..was it medivet by any chance?☹️

rumred · 09/12/2023 17:18

@FastFood I think I have to say something even if they will deny making a mistake. Which they will.
@wavingfuriously no, my local vets
