Dog destructive on medication for incontinence

Has anyone experienced a dog get destructive when on medication?

Our dog is on propalin for incontinence - she’s 1 year old Labrador. The vets have been trying to get the dosage right and I’ve noticed when dose was reduced she was much calmer. She’s had to go on a higher dose from last week and the incontinence is back under control, but she’s turned part Tasmanian devil overnight.

In the last 24 hours she has destroyed 2 plastic buckets, 1 giant pumpkin, several socks and a cuddly toy.

I work from home so it’s not like she’s left alone, but she’s very quick at making off with something.

we are increasing walks slightly (twice a day 45 mins) and switching food to see if that helps.

Any other suggestions? She loves to chew but will chew through most stuff very rapidly.

Is there a medical reason why she is incontinent?

Do you have a diagnosis for the incontinence? If not maybe it's the underlying issue rather than the meds ?

It can cause restlessness but unusual

Yes. We know the underlying issue. It might require surgery, but vets are seeing if it can be managed without.

It sounds as if they're trying to get your attention by 'making off' with stuff.
That's what my dog does when he wants my attention.
Please don't conflate more walking with making them calmer. It's a real misnomer.
Walking more will satisfy one part of their need but also ramp up expectation. Though I do wonder if 45 mins twice a day is enough. How long did you walk them before if less than an hour?

Less than an hour was really before she turned 1 - walks have been challenging to be honest, there’s been a lot of times where she’d refuse walks, or lie down half way, or I’ll take her to a beach and throw a ball and she’s exhausted after 15 minutes. She’s never had the energy levels of other Labradors I’ve owned. We’ve just found out she has hip problems too and has started painkillers for that (should have put that in initial post).

Honestly worried there might be other issues at play here - out of breath so soon concerns me. She’s a rescue so we don’t know the genetics.

My dog is on propalin for incontinence and we’ve not had any issues with behaviour after. if you’re dog is only 1, I would say it’s more likely you’re going into the teenage phase where they become the devil 🤣our lab cross never chewed anything until she turned 1 and then she ate the dry wall through to the brickwork!

how often is she having naps in her crate / bed? At 1 they’re still a puppy so might need a ‘forced’ time out to rest still by putting them in their crate for a bit to calm down. she should still be sleeping for most of the day. Increasing walks won’t do anything except make her fitter and want more and more.

if she’s napping alot and still being a nuisance you can try brain games like hiding treats round the house /garden for her to sniff out and find? If she’s fed dry dog food you can also do this with her dinner so you’re not over feeding.

training also really tires them out as they have to use their brain. Literally just 10-15 mins a day using their breakfast or dinner again will help.

The being exhausted after 15 mins of chasing a ball on the beach is normal. They’re sprinting full out for that time, you’d be knackered too 🤣
