Poodle/doodle or similar owners, should my clipped dog wear a coat?

I’ve always been pretty dismissive of dog clothing, but now realise that it was because I previously had low maintenance dogs with good fur coats of their own.
I now have a doodle dog, with the attendant grooming needs, and am wondering about pros and cons of coats with winter approaching.

I have three doggies, two are pugs and one a Chihuahua. We go for long walks every day and at this time of year they inevitably get soaking wet and filthy.
I towel them down when we get to the car and they go in the boot part in a bed.
I bought a coat for one of them (the youngest pug) to see how it fitted and it has arms and legs so it will cover her well.
She refuses point blank to walk in it ! It is hilarious. I think I'll just stick to towelling them down. A waste of time buying Christmas jumpers and the like although they do have warm coats for dry days. I know this was not helpful but I felt the need to talk...:)

I have a golden doodle who I clip short and he wears a light fleece in very cold weather.

stepintochristmas1 · 12/11/2023 20:26

Mine just wear a light coat if it's raining . They aren't cross breeds though .

FayKnights · 12/11/2023 20:27

My 2 cockapoo wear equafleeces, I keep them clipped quite short as their fur matts so easily. I think they’d be cold and would definitely be filthy without

SM4713 · 12/11/2023 20:32

Mine is 2yrs old, but only 6kg, so on the small side compared to many cockerpoo/labradoodle type combos. Last winter, I did put a fleece coat thing on when going for walks after a much shorter groom than I was expecting! Otherwise, she runs in the garden, runs along the beach and is fine.

Andywarholswig · 12/11/2023 20:42

My labradoodle always wears a coat in the winter as he gets so muddy and wet - I just bought this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mikki-Raincoat-Waterproof-Windproof-Friction/dp/B0BGQFMWFV/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=26F3RNFYZUP2H&keywords=mikki+doodles+dog+raincoat%2C+waterproof&qid=1699821652&sprefix=mikk%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-2 a couple of weeks ago as he has grown so much since last winter and it’s brilliant.

OhpoorMe · 12/11/2023 21:04

My poodle wears a light rain saddle coat if it's wet, but otherwise no.

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2023 21:18

Wouldn't have thought so. I have two, one with a poodle coat and one who has alopecia so is bald on her back - she wears a jumper in the winter, the other doesn't seem to notice whether it's raining/snowing or just cold.

LimeCheesecake · 12/11/2023 21:47

My doodle has a couple of coats, for when her fur is clipped short and it’s cold enough for me to have my big coat on.

im very tempted this year to get her one of the dog jumpers that have matching pjs from M&S. I think this is the last year the kids would find it fun to be dressed the same as the dog…

VelvetandLace · 12/11/2023 22:42

I didn’t even realise M&S sold pet stuff? Having looked, I am now wondering about a Harry Potter cloak …. ( not really practical for muddy walks though)

There's a huge difference between a dog coat for warmth and dryness on walks and dressing your dog up like a doll. First one 👍 second one 👎🤣
Anything that brings them home slightly cleaner and drier is a win for me!

margotrose · 13/11/2023 07:05

Most coats are generally for the owners convenience rather than the dogs' benefit.

If you want to make your life easier with one then that's absolutely fine, but the vast, vast majority of dogs don't need them.

*obviously there are some exceptions like puppies, elderly dogs or sighthounds etc.

LimeCheesecake · 13/11/2023 07:26

Maybe the Harry Potter clock for Halloween next year, not muddy dog walks…

gotomomo · 13/11/2023 07:29

My ddog has a waterproof high vis jacket for keeping him dryer especially night lead walks and also safety, black dogs can't be easily seen at night

Anonanonanon1 · 13/11/2023 09:34

Equafleece, yes....in bad weather.
M&S impractical dog gear, absolutely not.

Ylvamoon · 13/11/2023 12:26

My Poodle X is clipped very short due to matting.
She has a rain / light winter coat that she only wears if it's very wet or we go doggy training class with lots of standing/ waiting around (indoor riding school)
On normal walks, I wouldn't bother, they run and play and seen fine.

Great news! Thanks everyone for your replies. ( Was joking about HP cloak btw)

my cockapoo has a three peaks rain coat type zip up things that covers everywhere except the back end IYSWIM
without it she is a filthy soaking muddy mess in approximately five minutes. Her coat takes forever to wash and dry so it makes an enormous difference just having to dunk her muddy paws in a bowl of warm water then quick wash of her tail and dry those off
