Winter jacket recommendations (for me, not pup)

Dracomalfoysmum · 12/11/2023 15:08

I’m a new dog owner-can anyone recommend a really good winter jacket?

My requirements are:

  1. completely waterproof (I’m in Scotland so shower proof won’t cut it 🤣)
  2. warm cosy for winter morning toilet trips
  3. not so warm that I’m hot and sweaty after 10 mins walking
  4. not more than £100, or can pick up for less on Vinted/ebay
  5. comfortable lining eg fleece or similar
  6. non detachable hood (the bit where the hood attaches always leaks!)

Ideally, something I can actually try on in a shop to make sure it fits!

any recommendations very much appreciated!

The Seasalt Janelle ticks most of your list but the hood is detachable https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/fleece-lined-waterproof-womens-janelle-coat?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjMKqBhCgARIsAPDgWlxZPuykt5IOa-KsDzaJfOMb2g6SiwW0bEz2CQ7-ZjxcEzHE4IEjl4AaAkdOEALw_wcB it is over budget but I got mine half price in the sale and currently on offer here if you could stretch to the extra £20 https://www.hartsofstur.com/seasalt-janelle-coat-squid-ink.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjMKqBhCgARIsAPDgWlyUL3XRDIwP3A91Kz4EO62IkVXc5d4bpDOD-Nb9H-88tPPcowDo2qAaAvFDEALw_wcB I think Seasalt have an eBay outlet and they often come up on Vinted/eBay for sale.

It really is a great practical coat and the longer length is fab. I wear mine to walk to/from work in ALL kinds of weather and it's never let me down.

I wear specs so find hoods are generally not great so I wear mine with this (and don't care that I look a bit of a numpty at I'm dry and can see!) https://www.didriksons.com/en/women/accessories/waterproof-hats/southwest-adult-unisex-s-hat-504209-454b it's been a complete gamechanger for me!

I've also really rate Didriksons - there are so many and lots of old (cheaper) models on offer. They are true to size, a little generous if anything, and properly waterproof.

Absolutely second the Janelle from Seasalt. Had mine a year now and it's as good as new. Never leaked, windproof, warm but not sweaty.

Look on Vinted for Didriksons. You won’t find new at that price, but they are fab. I am also in Scotland and rely on these for dog walking about 8 out of 12 months of the year.
They come in different warmth ratings so check out any you find.

I second Didriksons, I bought mine after being fed up of other expensive brands leaking or losing warmth when doing dogs and horses. Five years on and it's still waterproof and warm. Definitely worth the investment.

I also live in Scotland on the west side so rain is a significant issue here 🤣.
This is my advice for what it’s worth. I have an admittedly very expensive long waterproof coat. It has no lining but that means I can wear it most of the year round. I bought the next size up so it’s big enough that I add layers in the winter.
It comes to my knees then if I’m wearing wellies only a tiny bit of me is exposed to the endless rain we get here. Secondly as it doesn’t have a lining it folds up easily and is quite compact.
If you have the spare cash it’s worth buying expensive brands as they will last longer and also again IME be waterproof for longer. My coat is nearly three years old I wear it all the time and looks as good as the day I bought it. Maybe look at brand like Musto, personally I would never buy waxed cotton it goes a stiff as a board when it’s wet and is cold my coat is some sort of gortex it drip dries hanging in the bath in under an hour.

I bought this one for DH for football and I wore it for a fireworks display when the rain was vicious and horizontal and I stayed warm and dry - the hood is not too big either.

It's not wildly sexy but it certainly does the job.

(A tip: don't tuck the flaps into the pockets - the rain was that bad, I ended up with pockets full of water! Although it didn't come through.)

I've got the Janelle for walking to work as it's a bit smarter than my dog walking stuff and it is indeed waterproof and not too warm. It's a really nice coat and I get lots of comments from people.
