Ddog came out of surgery and home this afternoon- tplo surgery so pretty significant. Set up in a large comfortable pen but she just won't stop crying 😢
Anyone any miraculous solutions???

My poor dog was like this once after a general. She just wouldn’t settle at all, paced the house and cried all night. I even slept on the sofa to be with her and then took her up to bed but she just cried. I’ve no magical solutions but if it’s any consolation, it was a one off. All generals before and after were fine. x

Very common response after general anaesthetic unfortunately - worse if the dog is muscular with low body fat, slows down removal from the body apparently. My girl was almost hysterical for 18+hrs after having a tooth out recently, it's very distressing but not sure much helps, sorry.

What pain relief has she had?

doodleygirl · 30/10/2023 22:08

My girl was the same, DH slept in the pen with her. She was much better the next day x

Motorina · 30/10/2023 22:18

It may just be disorientation from the anaesthesia but I would speak with your vet to see if you can give any additional pain relief.

ScattyHattie · 31/10/2023 12:11

@thekingfisher Hope she's feeling better this morning and you both managed to get some sleep.

My dog was off & cried for about 24hrs post GA it wasn't pain but dysphoria from drugs, I assumed was the anesthesia but discovered when she had to be sedated for bloods that Buprecare (Buprenorphine) was the culprit. I mentioned it to next vet specialist we saw but they used methadone as standard and she was bright & normal after GA so requested my vets followed their protocol with her in future.

Thanks for all these comments - we did get some sleep but had to just shut the door eventually and let her get on with it.
We've spoken to vet this morning and they have prescribed an additional pain relief as she is still besides herself Gabapentin. Which may also make her a bit woozy. Hopefully get her through first few days !
Glad to hear it's not unusual. I think it is just the anaesthetic but she also won't sit down so also seems like it might be pain in addition.

One of our boys was like this after he was neutered so a straight forward surgery. After a few hours we contacted the vet who gave an additional painkiller and he was better within 30 minutes. Slept for a few hours and was fine when he woke up. I’d check with your vet and see if there’s any more pain meds she can have.

Poor baby, hope she settles soon.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/10/2023 20:23

My dog was like this after being neutered and I was really surprised as was expecting the general janaesthetic to still be in his system.

We just did lots of cuddles and gave as much analgesia as he could have.

It took about 24 hours to settle though.

Does your dog need the toilet? We had to take our dog out for a little walk as he doesn't like pooing/weeing in the garden.

Blanketpolicy · 31/10/2023 20:27

Our lab was the same after every GA when if it wasnt a painful procedure.

Dh slept downstairs with him every time.

thekingfisher · 01/11/2023 21:17

Just thought I'd update. She's still not great but has an additional prescription for gabapentin. Still lot of panting and whining but think that's now just anxiety being needy about what's happened. She's eating /drinking and done poos and wees so nothing else we can do really bit plod through the recovery!
