So, this evenings walkies started as normal. Asked doggo if he wanted to go out which was met with the usual enthusiasm. He impatiently waited for my wizened old husk to put shoes on and get ready, then as I approached the front door, he stopped. Strange, thought I.

I wandered back up the hallway wondering how to approach this when I realised I hadn't picked up my door keys. I picked up said keys, put them in my pocket and turned back to doggo to decide what to do next. He was all ready to go now, for all the world as if he knew that I didn't have my keys previously, and that we could proceed now that I had them safely with me.

Coincidence, or did he know? I generally don't believe in all that, but it is just too weird.

Dogs pick up on ritual, and missing ritual.

IHaveAskedYouThriceNow · 26/10/2023 22:16

He knew. Getting your keys is part of the wellies routine - you missed a vital part!

Some dogs pick these things up quicker than others (my dog goes bonkers when I put my glasses on for some reason - I think it’s because needing to see = some exciting action).

Walkies routine 🙄

CarrieMoonbeams · 26/10/2023 22:17

I'm going to say that he knew - not in a spooky way, but because most dogs are very quick to learn routine so maybe the jingling of your keys would be part of the process he was used to.

Mine knows the difference in clothing and time, put on work clothes, she goes back to bed, day off up and ready she is.
Go shopping and come home is met with ok..its shopping, come home from work, full excitement to go out. They aren't daft!

EwwSprouts · 26/10/2023 22:21

^Mine was the same.

As a rule I never wear socks. When we had our rottweiler all I had to do was pick up a pair and she sat awaiting her lead put on... Ddogs are strange beasts.

My big dog will put herself to bed on work mornings, but only after I’ve finished breakfast. My old dog will round the others up for the last of the night garden visit. And my slightly bald one sits on my shoulders at supper time -she’s not keen on food! And the cat always visits when I’m o the loo, but that’s my fault as I unwittingly trained her with Dreamies!

None are daft but they are all very cute to routines.

I used to have a dog who would bark to go out at the Windows log off music!

HappiestSleeping · 26/10/2023 23:50

Thing is, mostly, my keys are already in my pocket. It's unusual for me to need to pick them up, so definitely not part of routine. I guess I sounded different or something.

I thought it was amusing more than anything else, I don't really think woo. Just that they are way more perceptive than we think sometimes. Of course, he could've just been having a stubborn moment.

One of my dogs new the end of the 6 o'clock news. Our last one worked out if he sat bolt upright infront of the TV screen, he would definately have our attention.
