What dog should we get?

We've decided the time is now right to welcome a dog in to our home.

I've got a long history with Labradors and collies so have naturally gravitated to those but I'm wondering if we've overlooked so others?

We're a fairly active and outdoorsy family. WFH permanently and have a large garden (not currently secure but will be!). 2 primary age kids. 2 cats.

We want a dog who will enjoy being around people, low prey drive and can be left for short stints. We're happy to put in the training and exercise required of most dogs. One with less slober would be preferable for my husband!

So, are we best sticking to what I know (DH is a dog newbie) or have we missed a potential dream dog?

Golden Retriever - beautiful temperament

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 12/10/2023 13:26

I think a lab sounds a great fit for you tbh!

Newuser75 · 12/10/2023 13:27

Lab sounds good. Or retriever, or spaniel?

margotrose · 12/10/2023 13:34

I wouldn't get a collie with cats - they won't appreciated being herded Grin

A labrador or a golden retriever would be a good fit, though? Or if you wanted something smaller, a mini poodle could also work.

A ChowChow.

I will look after it when you go away.

Oiyouoverthere · 16/10/2023 15:03

Thanks all. Decided to stick with what I knew and got a Labrador. Didn't expect it to happen so quick, but I'd been following a breeder on FB after a recommendation from a vet friend and enquired about their next litter, to go on the waiting list. Turns out there was a little girl who hadn't been collected so I got her!

She's absolutely wonderful and we are so in love already. No name though, so suggestions welcome!

We need a picture to suggest a name! Congratulations though you can’t go wrong with a Labrador 🥰.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/10/2023 15:39

Aww congratulations on your new addition
Would you prefer a human name or a dog name?
Tbf most females are called Luna or Lola around here

Oiyouoverthere · 16/10/2023 16:57

Haha, my mum's dog is Lola and My sister's is Luna 😂so neither of those. I don't mind human or dog names, our cats are one of each (human unusual and a very cat Mr whiskerson type name).

Oiyouoverthere · 16/10/2023 17:00

I'll post a pic as soon as I get a decent one. She won't sit still long enough at the moment so they're all blurred or look like we're strangling her!

As I started reading this I was thinking "get another lab, they're the best!" (not that I'm biased sitting here cuddling my 9 month old lab!) 🐾

Oiyouoverthere · 17/10/2023 13:06

And here she is. The only time she's still enough for a photo is when she's asleep 😂

Awww! Is she fox red? Or actually golden?

Oiyouoverthere · 17/10/2023 13:45

Technically fox red but isn't that just a shade of golden? When I was younger, there were only 3 colours of labs. Now their seems to be loads!

OP posts:
TallulahBetty · 17/10/2023 13:48

Yes officially classed as golden according to KC, but there is a clear difference in colour when simply looking at them/enjoying them.

IggySlave · 17/10/2023 13:54

what about calling her Vicky?

NormaLouiseBates · 17/10/2023 14:00

Technically it's a variation of yellow, not golden 😉

NormaLouiseBates · 17/10/2023 14:01

She's gorgeous by the way, she and mine could be sisters!

What dog should we get?
margotrose · 17/10/2023 14:05

Labs officially come in three colours - black, chocolate/brown and yellow. Fox red is currently classed as a variation on yellow but it wouldn't surprise me if it became it's own recognised colour in the future.

NormaLouiseBates · 17/10/2023 14:12

Another interesting fox red fact - they only come in working type. There are no show fox reds in the UK.

MissyB1 · 17/10/2023 14:17

I like Scout for girl dogs, my next one will be Scout. Currently have a bonkers schnauzer called Pippa.

momtoboys · 17/10/2023 14:23

She is gorgeous! How about Poppy?

Robotalkingrubbish · 17/10/2023 14:28

Tinkerbell - Tinker for when she’s playing you up (80% of time) and Belle for those nice, gentle moments.

Lucy - to fit in with your family ‘L’ theme

Riverlee · 17/10/2023 14:30

And she’s gorgeous.
