Dogs keep coming into my garden and pooping!!

Is there anything you would add to this sign? I have a dog so does it sound silly to say no dogs? Since he's there.

We live on a beautiful quiet country road, people from town come out here to walk because there are very little traffic. We are farmers and have a cattle grid coming into our house but some of the dogs can cross it, 1 jumps our small wall.

They really piss my dog off. They mark his territory is he isn't there and one in particular is always pooping just at the gate! There are a few dogs that do it and I've just seen one of them. With his owner sauntering passed our gate about 3 minutes later. The dogs are all off lead

As I said it is a small farm road so poop is kind of every where but right at our gate FFS. I have going through it with the buggy a few times if I don't spot it.

I would be putting a gate/fence up to stop the dogs being able to get onto your property in the first place.

Did you go and tell the owner walking past? If you keep quiet lazy people will think it's ok to allow that. I'd put up a specific 'do not allow your dog to foul our driveway' sign, and maybe one about active cctv!

@margotrose we have a gate but it's isn't always shut. I do shut it when the dog is out but DH gets a lot of deliveries and they say we're not in if the gate is closed.

@YesThatsATurdOnTheRug I didn't no. He would have been gone by the time Ds and I got to the end of the drive. But if I'm honest I'd be embarrassed. A big culprit is the wife of someone DH doesn't get on with, our relationship is very surface level.

Personally, I think the only solution is to shut the gate and get a lock box or something for deliveries. A gate with a sign on saying "private property" is a nice, clear barrier whereas a cattle grid is pretty meaningless in that regard.

A dog can't read a sign so if it's an area where dogs are allowed off the lead, a sign saying "no dogs" isn't going to make any difference, really.

Where I used to live there was a dog owner who encouraged her dog to foul the communal lawn in front of another person's window because she didn't like her. She said she always picked up, but didn't as I would arrived home and have to do it. I was concerned about parasites {children were involved) so went over the area with Jeyes Fluid. The result was amusing. Mrs Fouler sent her son out with dog to do its business in the usual area, and the dog refused, despite Mrs F signalling to the son, who was very resistant to her and resented her anger. (I couldn't see her gesticulating from her window, but could see his reaction.) Eventually he went away without the deed being done.
So I suggest Jeyes Fluid around the areas they use. Not only does it mask the smell of previous deposits, but they really don't like the smell.

A few jump the wall. It's about waist high. I caught one and my dog was squaring up to the other dog. The owner just kept walking I think she did say "come on" I ran out that time and shoo'd the dog.

I was hoping the sign might make owners think about trying to stop their dogs.

It's a public road but with no foot paths so most people walk their dogs off lead, I don't because he has terrible recall. But most of these don't seem great either. They come up sniffing my dog and his hair all stands up then the owner comes along and is like oh hi.... (this is on the road)

My dog won't cross the cattle grid

Is it somewhere you can put a camera , if so camera and sign about dog fouling and then report whoever doesn’t pick it up to the council .

margotrose · 07/10/2023 10:54

Ultimately it sounds like your land/garden isn't dog-proof so unless all the dogs are on a lead, they're going to wander over or jump the wall.

I'm absolutely not saying it's okay but personally I would be dog-proofing the land to keep my dog safe if nothing else.

I had a problem with a dog pooing on my drive, right under my kitchen window.

I happened to have a catering sized bottle of chilli sauce, the kind you see in kebab shops (DH went though a phase), so I started drenching the drive and entrance with sauce, particularly where dogs used to pee and poo.

It was mild enough that I was fairly sure it wouldn't hurt the dogs but it was enough to keep them off my drive.

Although by the third time tiny DD had walked through fresh poo at 7.30am on the way to nursery I really didn't care about the safety of the dog concerned and would happily have taken pot shots at it and its owner in my early morning murderous rage.

I think a physical barrier is likely to be most effective if you can possibly do it. There isn't much point talking to the owners if they are allowing this and you can't argue with stupid unfortunately.

I could put up an electrical fence that'd work!

How long is your driveway? Would a super soaker reach from your front door? A referees whistle blown loudly to attract their attention? Then a round of fucks from you once you had their attention?

Can you put a picket fence type thing to increase your wall height?
Tbh dogs nor owners will look at your sign.
I like the Jeyes fluid idea

How big are your deliveries, would a box (open normally, then the courier locks after. Perhaps with a ring doorbell so you see movement.
