Histiocytoma

I’ve got a 2 yo male Labrador and, for the past month, he’s had this small scab on his ear that grew steadily and then broke over the weekend, with lots of blood coming out. I went to the vet today and was told it was a tumour; best case scenario is it’s a histiocytoma, worse case is cancer. The vet took biopsies and I should hear by the end of the week. I feel sick - my boy is my everything. Has anyone else had one of these on their dog (specifically on their ear) and it was nothing to worry about? I get the results towards the end of the week.

Photo 1 is the scab and photo 2 is when the scan fell off over the weekend.

I am no medic but have had many clients and dogs that have had a histiocytoma. Histiocytoma are pretty common in young dogs. Ears seem to be a place that they come to. My lab had it on his muzzle. They seem to go as quickly as they come.

Dont worry about tomorrow until you need to. Hopefully results will come back as a histiocytoma.

Thanks so much @IngGenius - I just thought it was a scab and feel rotten for leaving it (he’s had it for a month). My dog is a great source of comfort to me (awful year) and I would hate for anything to happen to him. The vet said the lump had good, clean edges and his gut was telling him it was a histiocytoma but obviously couldn’t guarantee anything until we get the biopsy results. Thank you for your comments though, I will hope for the best x

My dog had one on his leg, obviously we were really worried too so took him straight to the vet to have it looked it. It was a large histiocytoma. It went away on its own after a while and now he just has a small bald patch where it was. He's never had one again

Mine had one on his leg and we had it removed as it was growing , it wasn’t an issue .

My beagle had one on his muzzle earlier this year - they gave us steroid cream and it disappeared within a fortnight.

Thanks all - I appreciate the positive stories. My vet said we can plan on an avenue of treatment after we get the biopsy results back, but hoping it just goes. Did any of yours bleed?

Yes, our beagles' bled a little bit - mainly when he knocked it.

Songbird74 · 02/10/2023 16:54

Thanks @margotrose - I think my boy knocked his and so it burst. I just assumed he has caught his ear. Glad that it seems quite common - the vet was as reassuring as he could be.
