Alternative to chappie ?

My lovely dog was on butchers and did great for ages on Butchers tins but he started getting a dodgy stomach and last time he went to dog sitter had an accident so she swapped him to Chappie and he was better immediately.
We've tried him on it at home and he was ok but isn't so keen on eating it and the last batch smelled a bit...fishy ? He wouldn't eat it so we went back to butchers and he was ok but now seems to be getting tummy troubles again - he loves it though.
We've done butternut, raw, the stuff you mix with water and he has tails dry food but can't seem to find a wet food he loves at a decent price. Chappie used to be mega cheap but not now!!
All suggestions welcome, especially if i can buy a test tin and not commit to a boat load of it!
I'm also interested if anyone else has had issues with butchers. Thank you 🙏

Chippies original will smell fishy because… it’s fish! What about the chicken one?

I like naturediet and think it’s great value

Floralnomad · 26/09/2023 20:29

I also use Naturediet and my dog has been very well on it .

My dogs eat Butchers- standard tripe loaf one.
No issues here. I once bought the gravy one as a change but I think that was too rich for one of them, so went back to the loaf.
No issues though.
The Butcher's lean and tasty range sounds like it is similar to Chappie.

They're the 400g tins.

This is the tripe loaf we use:

This is the lean and tasty (possibly similar to Chappie)
https://butchersdogfood.co.uk/product/lean-tasty-12-pack-390g/

This is the gravy one they didn't get on with:

On a side note- I don't buy the Butchers tins from B&M/ Poundland type places. They are a substandard version (only clear when you read the ingredients). They're packaged in the union flag plastic wrapping.

Chappie changed their formulations recently, had to take ddog off it because the original became to high fat for his diabetes and pancreatitis.

He is now on Burns white fish and rice. He fucking stinks but is doing very well on it 😂

Polkadotpjs · 27/09/2023 18:16

@cocksstrideintheevening mone already stinks ! Do you mean the food or the hound? He's breathing over my shoulder as I type 🤮

Is he elderly? Our old boy, sadly no longer with us, was on Butchers for ages and then suddenly stopped eating it. The stuff he refused smelled horrible so I think it was a bad batch. We bought some Tesco older dog food (tins), he loved it and did well on it.

allthehops · 28/09/2023 07:30

You need to just buy the chicken and rice variety of chappie, not the fish one!

IngGenius · 28/09/2023 08:38

Trouble with Chappie is that it is made of meat and fish derivatives so could have anything in it.

The recipe will change constantly depending on what meat derivatives are available at the time.

Even the chicken chappie has fish derivatives in it.

However the meat content is pretty low and it is mainly a cereal based food.

Polkadotpjs · 29/09/2023 14:52

He only went on chappie as dog boarder suggested it- he loved it and tummy was solved but now he so t touch it. Will see if I can get a trial of nature diet

My dogs only okay with the butchers tripe range, I've added in some of Jollies Lifestage biscuits (50% meat content ones) and his bellies been perfect.
