I don't know what's up with my boy 😕

He is 9.5. We've noticed over the last month or so he has been quite reactive to things and almost seems to be hearing things? He'll be fast asleep in the evening and will jump up and start barking as if someone has just knocked on the door but there has been no noise whatsoever. We've found him sat all sad looking staring at walls.

Yesterday he was terrible. If we so much as brushed past him he started whimpering and yelping and cowering. He did it a few times when no one was anywhere near him. We have tried feeling all his legs, paws, ears etc and it doesn't seem to be one area that triggers him. He was also excessively panting continuously. Now I know it has been hot and he is a bit wooly at the moment as due a hair cut but we had him in a cool bath yesterday and led on cold towels to keep him cool and he was led under our ceiling fan on the bed last night just panting so so much and drooling more than usual, he's not normally a drooly dog at all. He doesn't seem to be able to settle and I'm worried he is in pain.

This morning the panting has stopped but he still looks unhappy and not his bouncy self at all. I have booked a vet appointment for tomorrow morning and I'm going to keep a close eye on him today. Our vets are open today but not until this PM and for emergencies only so I could phone them later for advice if needed.

I just have a bad feeling 😭

I think I would have had him to the vet long ago, poor boy he's clearly suffering.

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 08:44

It was only yesterday he started with the whimpering and seeming in pain. It was only the occasional barking at things that didn't seem to be there that has gone on for slightly longer and that was very sporadic, a couple of times a week maybe.

Either thoughts that spring to mind for me are not good - obstruction in stomach/bowel or dementia ?

But yes, vets needed

Girlwithapple · 10/09/2023 08:55

I would be asking the vets to see him today @Onyoupop

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 08:57

Thanks @LaurieFairyCake dementia had come to mind with the random barking/confusion. He is eating and toileting normally although DH had some crisps last night and he would normally be begging for one but he wasn't interested 😕

@Girlwithapple yeah I've decided to phone them when they open at lunchtime.

Good plan @Onyoupop Let us know how he gets on won't you? Always such a worry when there is something wrong with our pups.

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 09:17

@Girlwithapple yeah I'll keep you posted. He is snoozing at the moment and quite settled thankfully.

My first thought was dementia - but then you mentioned yelping and cowering which makes me think there's something more going on.

I hope you get some answers Flowers

Choux · 10/09/2023 09:42

The yelping and cowering could be expressions of anxiety which is also a symptom of dog dementia.

Choux · 10/09/2023 09:43

The panting and being unable to settle could be weather related as it was hot yesterday but it could also be him feeling stressed and anxious so unable to relax.

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 19:34

Update - took him to the vets this afternoon and it turns out to be his neck that is causing him the pain. We don't recall him doing anything to hurt it but that's where the pain is coming from.

He's had a steroid injection and we have pain killers and taking him back tomorrow evening for them to see how he's getting on. She could see straight away from the way he was holding himself that he wasn't a happy boy!

He has perked up a little since then and is currently fast asleep so we will see what tonight/tomorrow brings.

So pleased for you that it's turned out to be something physical. Hope he perks up soon now he's getting treatment.

MoreOfADogPerson · 10/09/2023 21:19

That's great that it's something physical (not great that he's in pain, but at least it's identified). What breed is he? It might also be worth looking into a physio referral to see if there's any exercises/heat treatment/things to avoid so that it doesn't recur.

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 21:26

@MoreOfADogPerson he's a Welsh Terrier. That's a good point I'll mention to the vet when we take him back tomorrow 🙂

Ooh, Welshies are fab. My spaniel had/has signs of pain and I got some great insights through physio. Keep us posted!

LOSTAN · 10/09/2023 21:32

I hope he feels better soon poor darling. Definately get to the bottom of it ASAP for his sake.
I adore welsh terriers and have wire fox terriers. I have loved them all my life!
Many best wishes to you and gentle hugs to him!

Girlwithapple · 10/09/2023 21:41

Fingers crossed that he continues to improve ☺️

fitch568 · 10/09/2023 21:51

We've had a very similar experience with our 7yo cockapoo - he was scared of food - even favourites like chicken. 2 steroid injections resolved it for a bit but he's started the yelping in pain randomly again. He's not barking as much as he used to and yelped when went to catch a ball recently too. There is a condition called mmm they were worried about with ours, where the jaw gets inflamed. It's an immune disorder. More likely in some breeds than others (not cockapoos typically!) we still haven't got to bottom of it all.. he's going under GA this week to fully examine his mouth/jaw and teeth. Be interested to hear how you get on OP. Good luck. It's awful when they cower away from you.

nottaotter · 10/09/2023 21:54

9.5 is still pretty young for a terrier, so hopefully the vet will get him sorted. Fingers crossed, im sure the heat isn't helping🤗

Onyoupop · 10/09/2023 22:10

Thanks for all your well wishes. I will let you all know how he goes 🙂 He's such a little love, I hate seeing him distressed. Hopefully he will get a better sleep tonight now he's more comfortable.
