Hi all!

Just brought home my new puppy, a Maltese Shih tzu crossbreed yesterday.

First night went exceptionally well, very pleased. He settled well and hasn't been crying, not hiding too much, loves his bed and toys already. Has a blanket from mum to help him feel safe.

Something I have noticed is he is pooing outside just fine. But he wees exclusively in the house.

If I take him outside to wee he just waits to go back in. He will sit or lay down. Then when we get back inside he immediately wees.

And I will wait outside for like, an hour trying to get him to pee, but nothing. No idea what's going on.

I try to get him to focus outside. We will play a little to get positive associations built in the garden and then I'll leave him to wee. But nothing.

I'll go back inside to try and take a break, thinking ok maybe he just doesn't need it, and no exaggeration as soon as he steps inside he wees.

Anyone got any advice?

You just need to sit outside with them until they wee. Or, try picking him up when he goes inside and carry him out mid-stream.

That's what I've been doing so I guess I'll just continue that

It can take weeks so don't lose heart - at least it's summer and you're not having to stand out there in the freezing cold Grin

Thank you!
It's my first time having a dog so I really appreciate the advice

You'll be fine - just lots of persistence and patience!

I’m sure you do have this but a spray with enzymes in to really break down the smell so he doesn’t think inside is the loo. Not normal floor cleaner.

I have on occasion resorted to being outside for a while, bringing them in but having them on my lap for a few minutes and taking straight back outside and trying again. Sometimes works the second time.

Thanks for the advice, I am using the enzyme cleaner, I didn't know that's what it did though, I just followed the instructions I saw in lots of research😂 good to know how it works.

I'll definitely try the holding them on my lap for a while and taking them back outside, thanks!
