New puppy training question

foxylab2023 · 02/09/2023 15:42

Very exciting we have a new puppy (fox red lab) joining us in a couple of weeks. He will not be our first puppy as we also have a cockapoo however she was a special case when she was little and this is the first pup we will be fully training from the start.

Can anyone recommend any specific training books/videos to watch before he gets here dad is a gun dog champion and mum is a show lab. He is already mostly toilet trained and has begun crate training (breeder is really really good and giving them a great head start!).

We are super excited but want this pup to be fantastically trained as much as we can so any tips are much appreciated!

The easy peasy puppy squeezy book is very good despite the daft name.
Look into force free pet gundog trainers in your area it’s fantastic for them

Either of Zak George's books. Or both of them.

Amazing will add them to the list! Thank you

Lez Graham, The Pet Gundog (I think there is a puppy version too).

By all accounts field-line labs are, usually, the easiest of the gundog breeds to train, so have fun.

I would look at any of Pippa Mathison if you are getting a lab. Also sign up for LWDG

McCann videos on Youtube
Kikopup on youtube

Easy Peasey is okay but very simplistic.

We had the Happy Puppy Handbook and Total Recall -both by Pippa Martinson.

Unfortunately first lab hadn't read the book so I found some of it a bit frustrating, e.g. it would say something like if you do x, then 90% of puppies will do Y. Nothing about what to do if your puppy was one of the 10%

It was still useful, but just not exhaustive

Good tips here. We’ve just reserved our puppy (also a fox lab) and getting her in October. I’m going to order a few books.
